The film "Fountain": reviews, reviews

Daren Aranofsky differs in his talent with a small budget to shoot the tapes, which later become cultic: first the American director released the "Pi" (budget 60 thousand dollars), then "Requiem for a Dream" (budget 4 million dollars.). In 2006, Aranofsky made a film "Fountain" for only $ 35 million. Reviews of the public and critics on him were ambiguous. What is this movie about, let's see?

Darren Aranofsky and other filmmakers

Daren Aranofsky did not change his own traditions in this project either. Firstly, he acted simultaneously as a director, scriptwriter and producer of the tape. Secondly, global ideas and Napoleonic plans were again at stake: in one of the interviews the director confessed that he tried to do everything to make the film a difficult test of time. In the column "genre of the film," the "parable" was pointed out, which immediately sets the viewer to perceive "high" reflections on human being. Perhaps, therefore, the film "Fountain" reviews from critics and spectators received very controversial.

Aranofsky prefers to work with trusted people, so the film crew of "Fontana" in the overwhelming majority consisted of those with whom the director has already collaborated. For example, the soundtrack for the film was written by Clint Mansell, who also worked on the musical sound of the 2 previous paintings of Darren Aranofsky: "Pi" and "Requiem for a Dream." Operator Matthew Libatik also "migrated" to a new project from the previous two films of the director. And the production of the film, in addition to Aranofsky himself, was dealt with by Israeli multibillionaire Arnon Milchen, who is related to the director's latest work - Noah (2014).

The film "Fountain" - what's the point?

Everything that happens in the movie "Fountain" for 96 minutes, can be treated in different ways: the main action is constantly interrupted by some surrealistic pictures, which at first glance only distract from the main storyline. But such is the method chosen by the director to tell this story, there is no point in criticizing him. Who knows, maybe this is the kind of non-standard approach that forced the viewer to watch the movie "Fountain", leave a positive response. Everything unusual attracts attention.

The film develops three parallel storylines: in the present, the future and the past. In the present, the wife of the oncologist Tom Creo (Hugh Jackman) dies from a brain tumor, and the man puzzles over how to save her. Izzy Creo (Rachel Weiss) does not share her husband's fixation on her salvation, it's much more important to just spend time with him, communicate, finish her book. Finally, Tom found a clue: he believes that an extract of a tree can help to defeat the tumor. But Tom does not have time to carry out the plan, Izzy goes out of life, while asking her husband to finish her unfinished book.

Episodes from the book Izzy and the symbolic dreams of Tom are constantly mixed with reality and weave into one tangle. None of the interpretations of these surrealistic paintings Aranofsky does not confirm or deny, arguing that everyone can see what is happening in their own way.

Actors and roles

For any actor, it would not be easy to shoot in the movie "Fountain" - reviews, the description of the plot to that confirmation. The main roles in the film went to Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weiss, and the director best appreciated the work done by the actors.

Also in the film was Ellen Burstin, who previously played Sarah Goldfarb in the film "Requiem for a Dream." Mark Margolis, who was involved in the film "Pi", this time embodied on the screens the image of the holy father of Avila. Stephen McHatti is a Canadian actor who played in the drama "300 Spartans" in 2006, and in 2011 in the film "The War of the Gods: Immortals" - in the "Fountain" he played the role of the Grand Inquisitor.

The wild Mayan tribe embodied 70 actors on the screen, 20 of which are indeed the descendants of the Maya living in Guatemala. These include Fernando Hernández, who received the role of lord of Shibalba due to his excellent command of English.

In addition, in the film you can see Cliff Curtis (Die Hard 4), Sean Patrick Thomas ("Cruel Games"), Donna Murphy (Spiderman 2), Ethan Sapley (The Butterfly Effect) E.

Hugh Jackman and his character Tom Creo

Positive feedback on the film "Fountain" (2006) often related to the game of Hollywood's favorite - Hugh Jackman.

Previously, the role of Tom Creo was taken by Brad Pitt. However, some serious disagreements with the actor forced Daren Aranofsky to abandon the former performers and invite Hugh Jackman to the project. According to the director, he did not regret for a minute, since the Australian was not only a flexible and receptive performer, but also a great workaholic.

Hugh Jackman even before the release of the screens of "Fontana" surprised the audience with his ability to reincarnate. He felt equally well not only on the set, but also on the stage. The filmography of Jackman covers all genres: from the action movie ("X-Men") to musical films ("Les Miserables"). He succeeds in playing the role of scoundrels and superheroes, criminals and deeply decent people.

For filming in the movie "Fountain" Jackman at a certain moment had to shave bald and completely remove the hair from his chest. The name of the character Jackman translated from Spanish means "I believe", the same utterance can be applied to the talented play of the actor, which you can not simply not believe.

Rachel Weisz as Izzy Creo

When the Englishwoman Rachel Weiss agreed to shoot in the film, she was engaged to Darren Aranofsky. According to the director, the actress, after reading the script, literally "grabbed" him and stated that no one could cope better with her role.

Weiss and before filming in the "Fountain" was very fond of the unusual movie. For example, she played a major role in the mystical insurgents "Mummy" and "Constantine: Lord of Darkness", so it is not surprising that the opportunity to participate in the experimental picture of the groom so inspired her.

The role of Izzy Creo, dying from cancer, nevertheless, did not become her better job. At the same time, the participation of the actress in the film made it possible to cut budget expenditures by half.

Premieres and box office

For the first time the picture "Fountain" critics and viewers saw in 2006 at the Venice Film Festival. In September of the same year, he premiered in France at the festival in Deauville. Until November 22 (when the tape was released in the US), the director managed to present the film at the International Film Festival in Toronto, São Paulo, Copenhagen, Zurich, Warsaw, etc. In Russia, the official premiere of the painting (March 1, 2007) was attended by 95 thousand people.

The film did not pay for itself at the box office: world collections amounted to only 15 million dollars. 6 million dollars managed to help out with the release of the picture on DVD.

«Fountain (« The Fountain », 2006)»: reviews, reviews

According to the rating of film critics all over the world, the picture received 51% of positive reviews.

The review of the movie "Fountain", written by one of the Russian critics, says that the story has turned out to be too confusing, and not every viewer, having watched the tape to the end, can confidently tell about what it was shot. Read the "cipher" - it's unlikely that the viewer wants to go to the cinema. Any director who makes extensive use of allegories and metaphors, still should not break away from the reality and mental abilities of the viewer, since the picture is being shot for him.

At the same time, there are many positive reviews that praise the director's non-standard approach to the embodiment of his plans and his desire to talk about the eternal - love, life, death. Is it possible for a person to avoid death? Or is death necessary, so that the soul can be renewed again and again, come to this world for a new spiritual experience? To this question, the viewer must probably find the answer himself, since Daren Aranofsky admitted in his interview that he did not try to give an answer, and the film can be called a kind of "thinking aloud."

As for the audience, they describe what is happening in the picture with epithets "beautiful, colorful," and are mostly admired by Aranofsky's work, claiming that when they review again, they discover more and more truths.

In conclusion, one can say only one thing: Aranofsky's work, including the film "Fountain", a response of an unambiguous character does not deserve either from critics or viewers. Philosophical cinema exists to cause disputes in which truth is born.
