The drug "Povidone-iodine" is an antiseptic medicine belonging to the group of oxidants, halides and aldehydes. The composition of the drug includes a complex of polyvinylpyrrolidone iodine. In this case, the free iodine in the preparation is in a concentration of 0.1-1%. The spectrum of antimicrobial activity of the medicament is quite wide.

Povidone-iodine is effective against a number of bacteria (Gram-negative and Gram-positive, except Mycobacterium tuberculosis), protozoa, fungi, viruses. The effect of the drug "Povidone-iodine" is based on the ability to bind free iodine, and in contact with skin - release it. In this case, the substance is released gradually and has a uniform bactericidal action against microorganisms.

After application to the surface of the skin, the drug forms a thin colored layer. The color will persist until all iodine ions are released and have the necessary effect in the form of damage to the wall of microorganisms. The action of the drug "Povidone-iodine" is more prolonged than that of ordinary alcohol solutions.

Indications for use

Povidone-iodine can be used to treat the surface of the patient's skin during surgical procedures, surgical procedures (injections, blood sampling, biopsy, puncture). Also, the drug is suitable as a drug for treating the hands of the surgeon and the medical after the operation, hygienic treatment of the hands during the care of infectious patients. The drug can be processed items for care of patients, tools. With the development of infectious lesions of the nasopharynx, the oral cavity, the drug "Povidone-iodine" is used for rinses.

In the case of infected wounds, burns, abrasions, ulcers, the drug is used externally. The drug "Povidone-iodine" (candles) is effective in the treatment of vaginitis, trichomoniasis. In gynecology this antiseptic can be used for small gynecological manipulations of a surgical nature (coagulation of cervical erosion, artificial termination of pregnancy, installation of an intrauterine device). In dentistry, the drug is used to disinfect the oral cavity during dental operations.

Mode of application

For the purpose of treating the skin, 1% is used. In this case, the medicine "Povidone-iodine" can be rubbed, sprinkled, and impregnated with a wet bandage. Exposure to the skin should be at least 2-3 minutes. In the case of treatment of the hands of surgeons, medical staff about 5 ml of the drug solution is rubbed from the palms to the elbows. The procedure continues for 5 minutes, after which the hands are thoroughly rinsed with water. For complete hand treatment, repeat the procedure. When the skin is infected, it is necessary to treat them with the drug for 1-2 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with running water. The bactericidal effect of the drug may decrease somewhat in the presence of blood.

Candles "Povidone-iodine" are inserted into the vagina for 1 piece. The course of treatment is usually not less than 2 weeks.

Side effects

With increased sensitivity to iodine, allergic reactions may develop, accompanied by itching, burning, reddening of the skin and mucous membranes. In the case of such complications, it is necessary to abandon further use of the drug and consult a doctor.

Contraindications

Contraindication to the use of the drug "Povidone-iodine" may be the following:

  • Hyperthyroidism;
  • Severe renal insufficiency;
  • heart failure;
  • Adenoma of the thyroid gland;
  • pregnancy;
  • The period of breastfeeding;
  • Hypersensitivity to any components of the drug;
  • The period of the newborn ;
  • Children's age to 8 years (some forms of medicine).

Release and dose forms

The drug "Povidone-iodine" comes in the form of:

  • Solution for external use (30 ml, 120 ml, 1 l);
  • Ointments in tubes (20 g);
  • Candles of vaginal (packing of 14 pieces);
  • Liquid soap in bottles (120 ml, 1 l).

Also, the preparation "Betadin" ("Povidone-iodine" - international name, 10% ointment, 100 mg solution, 200 mg - suppositories) is also produced. There are medicines and other analogues.

Pregnancy and lactemia

The drug "Povidone-iodine" is contraindicated for use in pregnancy and lactation.
