Biography pages

Gilbert Baker was born in Kansas in 1951. Two years of his life he gave to the American army, and after his discharge from the ranks of the armed forces he moved to San Francisco.

Baker stood at the roots of the movement for the rights of members of sexual minorities, and in 1978 he created the famous symbol - the rainbow flag of LGBT.

Flag of Freedom

Baker himself learned how to sew, and the first banner of freedom he created with his own hands. In June 1978, at the Gay Pride parade in San Francisco, the new symbol was first introduced to the public.

In 2008, in an interview, Gilbert Baker admitted: "When I saw how people accept this new flag, I realized that I was not mistaken. I could not explain it, but nevertheless the rainbow flag became a sensation. I saw all these people who walked through the streets of the city, and above them was a rainbow. When they looked up, their eyes lit up. "

LGBT movement, according to Gilbert, needed a new symbol, because previously nothing of the kind existed. For a while, however, a pink triangle was used, but this symbolism had a rather grim story. It was this patch worn on its form by homosexual men who were imprisoned in Nazi concentration camps.

The original version of the rainbow flag had eight colors, but due to the lack of tissues of some shades, their number was reduced to six.

Gilbert Baker was repeatedly asked to patent a rainbow flag, but he refused.

In memory of the creator

San Francisco Mayor Edwin Lee in his press statement after the death of Gilbert Baker said: "The rainbow flag has become a source of comfort, pride and empathy. Gilbert was a pioneer in the struggle for the rights of representatives of the LGBT community, and in our hearts he will forever remain an artist and creator, a faithful friend for everyone who knew him.
