Syzran: attractions, history and architecture

In the Samara region, on the banks of the Volga River, is the ancient city of Syzran. The sights of the town are represented by architectural, sacral and natural monuments. And then tourists come here to admire the picturesque views of the Volga, as well as to purchase unique Sizran icons.

The name of the city is quite interesting and has Turkic roots. The word "syzran" can be translated as "a river flowing from a ravine." Obviously, here we have in mind the local river Syzranka, which in ancient times was built a fortress.

Within the Samara region is the modern city of Syzran. The Volga takes the waters of the Syzranka river here. The very same settlement is not very big: it covers an area of 117 square kilometers. There are about 175 thousand people living in Syzran.

History and symbols of the city

Syzran was founded in 1683. Although archaeologists have determined that the local lands were inhabited 3-3,5 thousand years ago. This was facilitated by a favorable climate and the presence of a large river near.

The city was built on the banks of the Volga, in order to protect the Russian trade routes to the east. However, a successful geographical position already in the XVIII century turns Syzran into a major center of trade and crafts. In the next century, the city is also developing flour milling industry. At one time, Syzran was one of the three leaders of the empire for grain processing.

In the early twentieth century, Syzran experienced an industrial revolution, and in the years of Soviet power, the city, through the oil deposits found here, was called "second Baku". In Syzran also built a plant for the processing of oil shale, whose products have been popular in many countries in Europe and Asia.

The modern coat of arms Syzran was approved in 1780 by Queen Catherine. On the golden shield on the green hill proudly goes a black bull, personifying wisdom, prudence and honesty. The city has its own flag with an identical image.

Do tourists go to Syzran? The sights of this city, though not so popular, but interesting and original. First of all, it is worth a thorough study of the quarters of the merchant city of the XIX century, which is well preserved. Stunning scenery and views of the Volga open up to the traveler at the entrance to Syzran.

Another thing that attracts tourists to Syzran is the tomatoes. These Syzran vegetables are in great demand far beyond the city limits. And at the end of summer a grandiose festival "Syzran tomato" is held here, accompanied by tomato battles and tastings of various dishes.

Syzran: sightseeing of the city

If desired, all the sights of Syzran can be viewed in 3-4 hours, most of them are concentrated in the area of Sovetskaya Street.

The main sizran attractions include:

  • The remains of the Syzran Kremlin;
  • Kazan Cathedral;
  • Monastery Hill;
  • Arboretum of the 60th anniversary of the VOOP;
  • Syzran icon-painting school and others.

From Syzran Kremlin until now only one Spasskaya tower (1683) has reached. It is built of stone and has 27 meters in height. Today there is a museum in the tower. Near it there was a stone church about the same age.

Kazan Cathedral of 1872 is the most pompous and beautiful building in the city. From the Spassky Tower you can walk to it in ten minutes. The temple is beautifully decorated not only from the outside, but also from the inside.

There are several natural monuments in Syzran. First of all, it is worth visiting the Monastery Hill. This hill with sand dunes is located on the shore of the reservoir Syzranskaya HPP. In 1967 a 277-hectare natural monument was erected on this territory. In the southern part of the city there is a dendrological park, in which there are more than a hundred different kinds of plants.

Architectural heritage of Syzran

In 1906, a serious fire broke out in the city, so the architectural heritage of modern Syzran is represented mainly by stone structures. Although several beautiful wooden buildings with carved details also survived.

The most beautiful and interesting in the city is Sovetskaya Street. On it you can see monuments of different architectural styles: classical, eclectic, modern style. Perhaps the most unusual building in the city can be called the mansion of the merchant Sterlyadkin, built in 1914. But fans of ancient wooden architecture should take a walk along the streets of Ulyanovsk, Kirov and Sverdlov.
