From the time of foundation until the end of the war

In 1930 the shipbuilding institute appeared in Leningrad. It was from this moment that the history of the university began, which we were going to consider. However, in fact, the established educational institution had roots that go back to the past. The university appeared on the basis of the shipbuilding department, which used to be part of the local polytechnic institute.

During the Great Patriotic War, the shipbuilding institute had to cease its activities. Some of the students and teachers were evacuated to Przhevalsk. It was there that the educational process continued. It was terminated when the war ended. People who left once again returned to Leningrad and began to rebuild the institute.

After the war to our days

After the war, Tovstyev was appointed rector of the shipbuilding institute. This person did a lot for the university. Thanks to him, the educational institution began to develop. Tovstykh in the postwar years was engaged in the restoration and development of the material, scientific and educational base. Thanks to him about the 60s of the last century a decision was made to build a new complex of the university and a laboratory unit.

In 1967, the university received an important award for him - the Order of Lenin. It was issued for the contribution that the institute made to the development of shipbuilding, the training of highly qualified specialists. In 1990, the university received the status of a technical university, and in 1992 the institution completely acquired the modern name, becoming the St. Petersburg State Maritime Technical University.

Modern University

The admissions committee of SPbGMTU annually receives a huge number of entrants. And this is not surprising. Currently, the maritime university, functioning in St. Petersburg, is considered a unique educational institution. This is the only university in our country that annually produces from its walls highly qualified world-class engineers capable of engaging in the design, construction, technical operation of various sea-going vessels and submarines.

Faculties of ocean engineering and shipbuilding, ship power engineering and automation

This structural unit, leading its history from the shipbuilding department of the Polytechnic Institute, prepares students in 5 different areas of training, 8 specialties. Among them there are such as "ocean engineering", "shipbuilding", "software of automated systems and computer technology".

An extremely important structural unit in the St. Petersburg State Marine Technical University is the Department of Ship Power Engineering and Automation, because the heart of each ship is the ship's power plant. To work with it, specialists are needed. There are a lot of specialties at the faculty. Among them, we can distinguish "ship power plants", "ship automation systems and electric power engineering", etc.
