Side stones: characteristics, types and technology of construction

In order to improve the street and the roadway part of it, as well as to fence off the road from the sidewalk, side stones are used. Simply put - this is the most common curb of natural rocks.

Such curbs are made from sedimentary, igneous and other species of rock that have not been affected by weathering, and also do not have various flaws in the form of chips and cracks. Durability, mechanical strength and frost resistance - this is how the side stone differs from the concrete border .

In addition to eternity, the granite material also adds aesthetic beauty to the roadway and cobbled streets. Low-key, but fundamental and thorough, this stone gives a touch of retro and nostalgia to the streets of the city.

Functions of the side stone:

  • Protection from soil erosion;
  • Protection against rainwater and snowdrifts;
  • Separation of pedestrian and other paths from the carriageway;
  • Reinforcement of paving slabs and paths.

Specifications of the side stone

There are several types of curbs:

  1. Staked Side Stones Are obtained by mechanical action of an instrument. The most commonly used thermal or percussion instruments.
  2. Sawed - are produced by cutting with cutting discs or saws.
  3. Rectangular have the form of a rectangle and are marked with the letter P.
  4. Curvilinear bead stones have rounded corners. Marked by the letter K.

In the designation of stones, letters are used: D - rock; В - entrance stone. The numbers indicate the radius of curvature (in meters). The standard product has a length of 0.7 to 2 meters, if you need a product longer than two meters, then such a stone is made to order. The weight of the side stone depends on its dimensions, material and shapes. Approximately the weight is from 80 kg and above for 1 running meter.

Device technology

Installation of side stones is not difficult. But you need to observe all the subtleties. Usually curbs are installed simultaneously with the roadway device. Then both the road surface and the curb itself will become one and will be very strong.

  1. Excavation. Digging trenches under the curb. The length, depth and width of the trench should be planned taking into account the size of the stone, as well as the concrete formwork. Note that the surface of the trench and its walls must completely repeat the shape of the side stone. Then he will not "walk".
  2. The device of a sand cushion. The thickness of the preparatory layer is pre-empted by the project.
  3. The device of concrete formwork. The choice of concrete for formwork must meet the high demands of strength and frost resistance. The thickness of the formwork must be at least 100 cm.
  4. Works on the installation of a cement-concrete foundation under a stone.
  5. The device of side stones is made 10-15 minutes after the formwork is made. Since the granite curb is very heavy, it is better to use special equipment in the form of a loader when installing it.
  6. Fixing the stone with cement-concrete mixture. The allowed width of the gap between the stones is not more than 10 mm.

Among other things, the types of such curbs depend on their purpose: road, lawn and garden. Decorative bead stones are famous not only for their beauty and unusual shapes, but also for various patterns applied to them. The cost of such stones is very high.
