The Japanese scooter "Honda Dio 27" was created in 1988. For twenty-eight years of continuous production, six generations of miniature vehicles have been replaced. The moped "Honda Dio 27" does not require a driver's license, since the engine's working volume is less than fifty cubic centimeters. But the scooter's running parameters are not inferior to those of a light motorcycle. In the rest, the moped also repeats the data of his older brother, a small class bike. Production start

The Honda Dio 27 model is the representative of the second generation of Dio scooters and the main base version for later modifications. However, before it for four years, from 1988 to 1992, moped AF-18/25 were produced, which became the beginning of the whole project to create a compact vehicle in the cramped conditions of the metropolis. And although the aim of the designers of the Honda concern was an economical scooter for the city, then it turned out that it was possible to travel on it, to travel long distances both along the road and on country roads.

The first scooter Honda Dio 18 descended from the assembly line in January 1988. The model immediately became popular, and it was quite deserved, because a slightly futuristic design combined with good driving qualities attracted buyers. The moped looked modern, the layout was comfortable, and the engine never failed. Demand was high, and the manufacturer had to increase the release of the debutant. European dealers began to order large quantities of "Dio-18", and scooters were sent directly from the assembly line to Asia, and from there to Western Europe.

At first, even some difficulties with exports arose, since the Japanese market also needed economical mopeds for everyday driving. The production had to be reoriented to the consumers of the country of the Rising Sun, and with the increase in the output of the model, it was already beginning to export to the European countries. After placing part of the production in Taiwan, the production of mopeds increased sharply, and their deficit gradually disappeared.

Experiments during production

The first model, during production, tested different types of brakes. Initially, the drum was installed on the moped, then the wheels were equipped with disc brakes, which looked more modern. At the same time, a version of Dio-SP was created, which was produced in small series. These mopeds differed from the basic AF-18 by a defiantly bright combination color and a fundamentally different design of the instrument panel. Production of the first generation model was discontinued in 1992.

AF-27 Super Dio

"Honda Dio 27", a photo of which is posted on the page, was released serially after the out-of-date AF-18 and based on it. Strictly speaking, the model AF-27 was a deep restyling of the previous scooter while preserving the design and all the characteristics of the engine. Motor AF-18E did not upgrade. The engine as a whole fully complied with the requirements of the new "twenty-seventh" model in terms of power and other parameters.

The main difference between the Honda Dio 27 and the previous model was the increased size. Of the new developments on the scooter appeared a small trunk under the steering wheel, as well as a modified design of the instrument panel, it was significantly expanded and added several control lamps.

During the production of the Honda Dio 27, three modifications of the moped were additionally created, which later were produced in parallel with the base version:

  • AF-27 SR - with front disc, rear drum brake and forced engine without changing the working volume, but with increased power.
  • AF-27 ZX is a modification with sportiness features, with a front disc brake of increased diameter, a rear spoiler with an integrated brake light and a new silencer.
  • The AF-27 XR Baja is a modification with a pronounced sportiness and enduro style features, a disc front brake, a steering wheel from the Honda XR250 Baja motorcycle and associated optics, a dashboard and windshield protection.

A new version

Later, another modification of the Honda Dio 27 scooter was created with an electric motor and alkaline batteries, which were installed in place of the gas tank. The batteries were charged at home from a household outlet. Moped with electric drive was produced only for the Japanese consumer and was not exported.

Protection

In 1993, a moped was equipped with an anti-theft system, which was a special shutter, which closes the ignition lock. The number of abductions was sharply reduced, since it was impossible to open the protection without a special tool. The curtain was opened after a set of electronic digital code on the dashboard, which only the owner of the scooter knew. The effectiveness of this anti-theft device was obvious. Its only drawback was that if the electronic code was forgotten, it was not possible to open the ignition lock, it was necessary to call the electronics engineers and turn off the entire system.
