Rotary cut veneer: production technology, application

What is the veneer, not everyone knows, but only those who deal with this material. So called very thin layers of wood, which are obtained by sawing, planing or peeling of wood logs.

Scope of application

Today veneers are most often used to cladding wooden furniture. But this is not the only sphere where it is difficult to do without this material. This is the manufacture:

  1. Doors.
  2. Skateboards.
  3. Cases for musical instruments.
  4. Delta-wood.
  5. Plywood.
  6. Matchbox straws.
  7. Finishes for auto salons.

Comparative characteristics

To better understand the characteristics of each type of veneer, you need to look not at the specifics of its manufacture, but on the difference in consumer characteristics. A comparison of the thickness of different kinds of veneer will help in this:

  1. Sawn - 0.1-1.0 cm.
  2. Sliced - from 0.2 to 5 mm.
  3. Thinning - 0.1-10 mm.

Thus, peeled veneer in thickness differs from similar materials and is much cheaper. Since among all the listed ways of obtaining veneers, the most affordable is just peeling, so we will go further on this method.

Distinctive characteristics

Differentiate rotary veneer from analogues of other types will help the following features:

  1. The lowest value of thickness. In other words, this kind of material is the thinnest.
  2. If silt wood is used, the decorative properties of the material are significantly increased.
  3. Between late and earlier wood there are large gaps.
  4. The cost. It is the lowest because of the peculiarities of production. If more expensive raw materials (cedar, larch) are used, the cost will be higher. But if you compare with other methods of production, the price will still be lower.

Production features

Why is rotary veneer the lowest cost? The answer is very simple: because it requires a minimum of devices and materials. There is it as follows:

  1. Prepare billets of wood of a certain length. For this purpose, the cut trunk is cleaned of branches, branches, various growths.
  2. A prepared wooden blank is placed on the lathe. Use for this you can any wood - dry or damp. What is important, it is easier to abrade the louvre not dry, namely, raw wood. The main thing is to adjust the cutting element of the lathe as accurately as possible so that it removes the top layer from the workpiece in a spiral, thus giving a continuous web.
  3. Produce rough, and then primary processing of the workpiece. This is necessary to remove the bark of the tree and to level the surface - it becomes smooth, smooth.
  4. The final stage is the removal of a layer of wood of a predetermined thickness. The layer is removed along the entire length of the workpiece simultaneously, which makes it possible to obtain a material of maximum width.

But the finished tape is still a semi-finished product, which must be subjected to subsequent processing. The main document on which the rotary cut veneer is produced is GOST 2977-82, so it prescribes the following actions: ready-made canvases must be sorted taking into account the quality of the product, its appearance, the wood species, the texture, then - mark, cut into pieces, join edges and only afterwards This is to fix each pack. And not ordinary packing materials, but special devices are used.

More often with the help of peeling, the usual matches are made - the prepared layers of wood are crushed into thin strips and cut into small pieces, as can be easily guessed - by the length of the matches. Usually aspen is used as a material for production of match blanks, as the most affordable material and availability.

If, however, birch veneer is processed, the material is obtained with higher aesthetic values. In addition, the production of peeled veneer comes from the following types of wood:

  1. Beech.
  2. Oak tree.
  3. Ash.
  4. Lime trees.
  5. Ilmy.
  6. Cedar.
  7. Larch.

The more expensive raw materials, the higher the cost and, accordingly, the aesthetics of the material obtained. In addition, the further use of the resulting material depends on the type of wood used.

disadvantages

Despite the low price, peeled veneer is not so popular for facing in those cases where beauty is required, unusual design and decorative surface finish. To eliminate this drawback, it must be decorated, which allows full use of the canvas as a facing material.

In order to enhance the decorative effect, it is possible to subject the rotary veneer to surface dyeing, hot printing (pyrotipy), opaque finish. But the original view does not prevent it from being used for other types of work.

Slevage wood

The exception is svinew wood. Although for gardeners svlevate is considered a blemish, for the production of wood sheets is of particular value. What is it? The so-called trunks (or branches) of trees, in which the fibers are located inside the trunk not exactly, but interlace in different directions, forming nodes, bundles, bundles and other shapes. During the removal of layers on the lathe under the knife, the fibers fall not equally. Thus, at the same time, the layer is removed across, along, at an angle. On the surface of the cut, you get a mixed texture that emits a pearlescent flicker. Svjalevatost meets at all breeds, but in some it is rare, and at others often, more truly - it is constant.

The most popular breeds from which veneers are made are birch, but not ordinary, but Karelian, and also sugar maple. Moreover, the birch is more unusual because it grows on the Kola Peninsula, the conditions there are quite severe, and the annual rings of the trees do not lie in a circle, but look like wave-like sockets.

The sugar maple tree is covered with knotty fibers, which have dark centers. But since this tree species does not occur in the territory of the former Soviet Union, with the exception of the Crimean Botanical Garden, only birch is used for the production of veneer material with high aesthetic indices. The technology of production of peeled veneer from Karelian birch is the same as from other breeds, but the cost, due to the special value of the material, is somewhat higher.
