Review of smartphone "Nokia E52". "Nokia E52": characteristics, reviews

One of the smallest and thinest smartphones at the moment, apparently, is the E52. "Nokia" tried to, like the E55, the thickness was about 10 mm, although it turned out slightly wider. Available in a gray or gold case, both of which look stylish. Despite the fineness, the E52 is a reliable phone, unlike some common cheap smartphones.

A few words about smartphones "Nokia"

As you know, smartphones of this manufacturer are combined into a linear series of models with some general purpose and functionality. So, the Nseries line is a family consisting exclusively of smartphones and Internet tablets. Mobile devices included in this line are able to provide digital multimedia services and have other additional features. All the flagship products of the company are in this series, where most of the advanced technologies and innovations of the research center "Nokia" are used.

Ruler Eseries (stands for Executive, i.e. executive) consists of business-oriented smartphones, with an emphasis on increasing the reliability of communication and supporting corporate e-mail. These phones are for the corporate market. This includes the smartphone E52 we are interested in. "Nokia" has created a device with extended battery life for corporate customers looking for their businesses a well-structured phone that does not discharge quickly. It can also serve as a modem for data transmission by using Bluetooth.

There are also known X-, C-, Z-, A-, L- and T-series phones "Nokia".

General impression of the possibilities of E52

"Nokia" on this phone tried to show itself. He has everything here, in a form factor 10 mm thick with a volume of 54 cm 3 and a weight of 98 g. This is quite surprising. Three-band 3G, four-cell GSM, Wi-Fi, A-GPS plus magnetometer, Bluetooth, 3.5 mm standard audio connector and 3.2 megapixel EDoF camera - all this is quite impressive, but given the fact that about half The E52 takes up the BP-4L battery, which is usually completed with the E90, E61i and E71, it seems even more stunning the achieved miniaturization level for the Nokia E52.

Reviews confirm that a battery with a capacity of 5.5 Wh, a capacity of 1500 mAh and a voltage of 3.7 V can be practically used after charging up to 24-27 hours. This is significantly higher than that of other phones in its class, produced by both Nokia and other manufacturers. If Wi-Fi, Bluetooth are used, and the built-in VOIP client is active, then on the Nokia E52 instruction informs that the battery can power the phone up to 24 hours.

Appearance and sensation from the phone E52

"Nokia" performed its design in the same vein as on the E51 before it, albeit with a light aluminum, rather than a steel shell and a battery cover, and with a slightly larger body width to accommodate much larger (2.4 "vs. 2 , 0 ") of the display. As a result, it feels quite solid in the hand, even with the above-mentioned fineness, with an "interesting" texture on the battery cover and a unique textured D-pad system. Trying to twist the E52 does lead to a slight movement, but without serious consequences.

Color of the case and emerging problems

Unlike the E55 and E51, Nokia's E52 phone is placed in a gray metal case. The typical color solution was white, like on E55 and E51, but here the gray background creates some problems both in terms of bright (reflection from gray) and in low light conditions (where it is not too dark to illuminate the keyboard).

The photo below shows the models E51 (left) and E52 - pay attention to the difference in perception of the marking of buttons on a black and gray background. Obviously. This circumstance can affect the choice of mobile phone.

Controls on the E52

"Nokia" in this sense continues to stay on top, supplying its gadgets with a full set of management amenities. There is a main camera shutter button on the right side, along with the Volume / Zoom / Voice buttons. There's a power button (nice to see it separately, not built-in "hang up" button) and a 3.5 mm audio jack at the top.

There is also a micro USB port on the left, extremely neatly recessed (you can at first not even notice it!). Like all the latest "Nokia", charging and through MicroUSB, and from the supplied charger.

Do not forget about the micro-SD slot, but it is hidden under the battery cover - a good solution, as it prevents dust from getting or damage to the card.

Firmware for "Nokia" E52

As you know, Nokia smartphones E-series are running Symbian OS. It is used by many major brands of mobile phones, such as Samsung, Motorola, Sony Ericsson and, above all, Nokia. This OS was the most popular smartphone OS around the world until the end of 2010, when the championship was captured by the Android OS. In connection with the transition to Microsoft's Windows Phone OS in January 2014, Nokia has stopped taking new options or changing Symbian software from developers, planning to gradually reduce its use.

In due time for this OS several software platforms were created, first of all the platform S60 for smartphones. S60 consists of a set of libraries, standard applications such as telephony and a personal information manager (PIM), and the Helix-based multimedia players. It is designed for full-featured modern phones with large color screens, which are usually known as smartphones.

In terms of software, the E52 is very recognizable for the package S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2. The package is very similar to the one in the E75, although in the following months, Nokia updated its browser-based browser version: v7.1. Here it is much faster and has a simpler interface, (although there is still no way to copy text from the page or open a new window). New PIM Eseries applications have been optimized, Nokia Maps has become Ovi Maps 3.0 (complete with unlimited time-based pedestrian navigation) and Home media has support for the functioning of UPnP.

On the other hand, there is a striking lack of both Podcasting and Internet radio. Many users have already demanded their recovery, and the company is considering how, according to these requests, the future firmware of Nokia E52 will look like. The latest firmware v091.004 was released on June 2, 2012.

What's new in photography with the E52?

"Nokia" in this model, like in the E55, bet on the use of EDoF (increase the depth of field) of the camera. This is a new idea, possible only in the digital age. Instead of the cumbersome and expensive automatic focusing mechanism, the idea is that a cheap fixed-focal camera can be significantly improved with a customizable lens that was designed to focus RGB light components in different ways. When the image is captured (creating in fact three "photos", one for each of the RGB components), then each part of the photo viewing area is analyzed with a clear definition of the details of the RGB images used for this part and the corresponding color is formed for all three images. Thus, the normal depth of field for the fixed focus camera is enlarged, and near or very distant objects can be captured quite sharply, which would not be possible with a fixed camera focus.

In good light, the results can be staggering for such a small camera.

And what are the impressions of the buttons and the display?

The keys on the front panel are elegantly sculpted, they are pleasant to use, while the 2.4 "display seems small for a modern smartphone, but well-formed in the context of such a small device, most importantly it is translucent. This means that the image is clear in sunlight - such , As well as on the displays of the more expensive E75 and E71 models, there are also no forbidden zones for lighting this screen (unlike many competitors' devices).

How does the sound play in E52?

The mono speaker on its rear panel is, fortunately, crystal clear and loud - it's an excellent option for listening to podcasts throughout the house. Music sounds clear, but without special quality from the supplied stereo headset. Connecting more advanced headphones shows that the "tin" sound appears not through the fault of the phone. Nokia sells high-quality headphones with a microphone and a switching box, which you should have if you really want to listen to Hi-Fi music on the E52.

How the E-52 plays video

As the numerous tests confirm, video playback in the S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 is pretty good, and almost any MP4, 3GP and FLV video that you throw on the E52 is handled without problems. WMV playback is a bit more messy, but, as always, digital video codecs are full "cats in a poke", and WMV rarely manages to correctly process.

And what about e-mail?

In terms of business software, the Nokia E52 phone is equipped with a new Nokia Messaging e-mail system, including a pseudo-correspondence correspondence with POP3 or IMAP accounts. This is by far the easiest way to mobile email. A full, edited version of Quickoffice v5 comes in the firmware.

The shortcut keys for applications work well, despite their tiny size.

Third-party applications on E52

Interestingly, a number of third-party applications were fully licensed by Nokia for the E52 and E55. WiPresenter (from Psiloc) allows you to use both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to control the Powerpoint presentation on the computer, while the Font Magnifier (also from Psiloc) does exactly what it is intended for, namely: allows a system-wide font change ( Between 50% and 140% of its original size) to make the text more readable (or fit into its larger size on the screen) in any application. Psiloc World Traveler (as in the original) is actually free, but it's nice to see it on and provide information about weather, currency rates and time. Top Hits Solitaires (from Epocware) is a first-class set of hundreds of variations of card solitaires. Enhanced Communication Manager (from WebGate) is a call filtering application, and Block Cascade is a "Columns" clone from Flash-based Gamelion.

E52 thin form factor

So, we came to the moment of truth. How good are the above parameters and the overall "Nokia" E52 characteristic? On the one hand, it's just a modest one, with a traditional T-9 keyboard and a small screen (relative to the N97 and iPhone and other "champions" of recent years) candy bar. But E52 is (potentially) as good as it can be achieved within its form factor. And, if you need a business-oriented reliable phone, which is still small enough and easily fits in any pocket, so as not to spoil the line of your suit, it makes sense in acquiring it. While the E52 is compact for a modern gadget, its owner has a complete email address, fully editable Office, full Web access, and much more. And all this in a device that will be guaranteed to work for several days on a single charge.
