RealD 3D - what is it? Comparison with IMAX 3D

SuperD, Dolby3D, IMAX. In such an abundance of terms, it's easy to get confused. RealD 3D - what is it? We used to watch cartoons drawn on paper or molded from plasticine. And we were glad of that. But the modern viewer needs something more serious. Therefore, the greatest film companies are developing regularly new technologies to achieve the most impressive images on the screen.

General information about three-dimensional cinema

About what is generally 3D, knows, probably, every schoolboy. But the answer to the question, what is RealD 3D, is somewhat harder to answer. 3D is called a three-dimensional or stereoscopic image. The image can also be two-dimensional. Remember the Egyptian drawings in your profile? They are two-dimensional, that is flat. Let's look at the example of our own eyes.

Human vision is stereoscopic. When we watch the news on TV, we see a two-dimensional image. When we look around ourselves, we see a three-dimensional, three-dimensional image. How it works? Our eyes see a slightly different picture. Try to close the left eye, you will not see with your right eye what you saw a second ago left. And, accordingly, on the contrary.

One image goes to the left eye, the other to the right. Then our brain connects it all into one three-dimensional image. On this principle, and based on 3D technology: to make the picture so natural, as if we see it live. Some supplement the effect of the presence of wind, drops in the face or smells. Suffice it to recall the viewing of films in the so-called 7D-cinema theaters.

RealD 3D - what is it?

The creator of the technology is the company formed in 2003, RealD Cinema. Sony has exclusive rights to this technology. This is what we mean today under 3D cinema. The essence of the technology is that when we put 3D glasses on the cinema, we get the effect of our own binocular vision. Lenses and special projectors give us a picture separately on the left and right eyes. Therefore it seems that all the objects in the movie fly to our faces.

But what is RealD 3D? The peculiarity of the technology lies in the so-called circular polarization, which provides a good visual effect from all angles of view and allows us to change the position of the body while watching the movie, and to tilt the head. The image for the left eye is projected clockwise. For the right - on the contrary. Because of this technology is called circular. Thus the image will not disappear on periphery. Actually, for example, for children, when they watch cartoons.

Technical description of IMAX 3D

The IMAX 3D technology, developed in 1970 by the Canadian company Multiskrin, works on the same principles, but there are significant differences. First, instead of circular polarization, a linear polarization method is present here. On the one hand, this limits the review. On the other hand, with this technology, the image is clearer and more vivid.

The second difference lies in the scale of the screen. This is a unique, curved screen, which is wider in width than the hall itself. That is, the audience is as if inside the image. This compensates for the limited visibility of linear polarization. Another plus of the IMAX-format is that it is accompanied by audio equipment of a certain class and quality, so the sound here creates an extraordinary effect. To broadcast movies in this format, you need two projectors.

RealD 3D or IMAX 3D: which is better?

Before watching the movie, many people think that this is RealD 3D for a cunning abbreviation. Is not it better to choose IMAX cinema? It's difficult to answer this question, because both technologies have their advantages. In addition, they are constantly improving and developing. In some cases, the choice will depend on the nature of the movie that you are about to watch. More epic and replete with effects and 3D graphics, movies will be interesting to see on the huge IMAX-screen.

On the other hand, "horror movies" may not be the best idea for viewing in IMAX. RealD 3D, in turn, is more convenient for viewing with children. In any case, there is no definite conclusion, much depends not only on the format chosen, but on the quality of the equipment in a particular cinema. In cases where the glasses are not serviced correctly and do not change in time, the impression of a circular RealD 3D may be even more limited than with a linear but high-quality IMAX.

What do people say?

RealD 3D - what is it? Reviews about the cinema in which this technology is used will help answer this question. However, the opinions of the people here are radically different. Someone scolds the quality of RealD 3D movie theaters, preferring the wide IMAX screens. According to others, the whole problem is in low-quality glasses. After watching movies in the IMAX 3D format, people often complain of severe dizziness and strain on the ears (due to the characteristic powerful sound). Many mothers do not want to bring their children here.

Speaking of the detrimental impact on vision, someone is ready to completely refuse to watch films in this format. Judging by objective reviews, it is worthwhile simply comparing the sensations in that and another format to make a choice for yourself. Soon, of course, the film company will please us with improvements and new interesting technologies.
