Perm emblem and flag: history, description, meaning

A large city on the Kama River is on the map of Russia since 1723. In this article we will talk about its symbols. When did the flag and the coat of arms of Perm appear? What do they mean?

A few words about the history of Russian heraldry

Originally the word "coat of arms" originated in Germany. Literally it can be translated into Russian as an "inheritance". In the beginning, the term migrated from Germany to Poland, and then penetrated and took root in Russia.

The first attempts in Russia to create their own heraldic system were observed by the princes of the Rurik people. At first, tribal (family) emblems appeared. Under Ivan the Terrible, the emblems began to be developed for entire lands. Much has changed in the 17th century, after Ukraine joined Ukraine. At this time, the influence of Polish traditions on the Russian nobility is greatly enhanced. In particular, the culture of Western European heraldry penetrates into the country.

Under Peter the Great in Russia there already existed a post of the Heraldmaster, who was to come up with arms for the separate cities of the empire. After the death of the king, this initiative was somewhat suspended. Interest in artwork was revived only under Catherine II.

The city of Perm: the history and origin of the toponym

In 1720, Tsar Peter I ordered to choose a place in the Siberian province for the construction of a copper smelter. The order was executed by Vasily Tatishchev, choosing a place near the village of Yegoshihi. A few years later a new city appeared here.

The city received another impulse for development in 1878, after the opening of the Ural railway. By the beginning of the 20th century, the population of Perm had reached fifty thousand. Here there was a theater and a cinema.

The word "perm" has very ancient roots and is translated from the Vepsian language as "distant land". According to many researchers, the so-called territories on which Perm now stands are representatives of the Finno-Ugric people (Veps).

The city, of course, has its official symbols. What is the meaning of the flag and the coat of arms of Perm? This will be discussed later.

Emblem of Perm: photo and history

In what year did the main city symbol appear? The emblem of the city of Perm is due to Empress Catherine II, who approved it in 1783. Immediately it is worth noting that its original appearance almost did not differ from the modern one. However, more on this later.

Adopted at the end of the XVIII century, the coat of arms of Perm existed in this form until the 60-ies of the twentieth century. In 1968, based on the results of the competition, a radically new version was approved. The main element of the new city symbol was the sketch of the monument to the "Fighters of the Revolution", which is located on Mount Vyshka. The monument was depicted on a heraldic shield consisting of three vertical bands: blue, red and green. Only in 1998 the city returned its historical coat of arms.

Emblem of Perm: description and symbols

At the heart of the main symbol of Perm (as well as in almost all city emblems of modern Russia) is a classical shield of the French type, pointed at the bottom. It is red, so the whole coat of arms looks very rich and noble. Elements on it are placed vertically, one above the other. There are three of them (listed below from below):

  • bear;
  • The Gospel book (located on the back of the beast);
  • Four-pointed cross of silver color.

The whole design of the coat of arms is laconic and restrained. Images are not oversaturated with details and colors. Such restraint is fully compensated by the depth of the semantics of the armorial elements.

What is the emblem of Perm? Let's try to understand this question.

Start to stand with the background of the shield. This is the most popular color in the heraldry color. He, as a rule, symbolizes courage, courage, courage. In this case, it can also confirm the capital status of the city.

A bear of silver color means vast territories and great natural riches. The Perm region, as is known, is rich in ore reserves and precious metals. It is worth noting and the fact that the beast is shown in the movement, which embodies development and prospects. It is curious that at the end of the 18th century, at the time of the first approval of the coat of arms of Perm, the bear symbolized quite another - the savagery of local customs. We are talking about indigenous peoples who used to live in Siberia.

The Gospel is not only a symbol of the Christian religion. This book also symbolizes enlightenment. Approximately the same value has a silver cross, located in the upper part of the city coat of arms.

Flag of Perm and its brief description

The flag of the city of Perm was officially approved in 1999 (a year later than the coat of arms). It has the appearance of a standard rectangular panel of red color, which shows the same elements as the city coat of arms. This is a bear, the Gospel, and also a four-pointed cross. And the bear goes towards the flagpole.

All the elements of the flag, except for the sacred book, are of silver color. The Gospel is painted in yellow (golden) color, which is symbolic for Christianity. According to approved standards, all elements should occupy 2/5 of the total length of the flag.

Finally

The modern flag, as well as the coat of arms of the city of Perm, were approved in the late 1990s. They are based on symbols that were developed back in the late 18th century.

The modern coat of arms of Perm (like the flag) contains three key symbols. It is an image of a walking bear, a holy book of the Gospel, and a four-pointed silver cross. The drawing and the palette on the city coat of arms are very reserved and laconic.

The flag of the city practically does not differ from its coat of arms and contains the same elements.
