Paints for rust - a simple solution to a complex problem

Recently, high-quality rust-based paints are increasingly on sale, thanks to which any person can not only perfectly update old metal products, but also save a lot of time while doing so. Just recently, in order to update, for example, iron railing or grilles on windows, they had to be pre-treated with sandpaper or a grinding machine (to remove the old coating), primed the surface and only then apply a new enamel. Modern rust paint can be used without pre-treatment of the surface, which is very attractive to them the interest of buyers.

Despite promising advertising, many buyers still feel some distrust of this kind of paint and varnish products. Should I trust the producers of these coatings or not? In fact, buyers should be aware that virtually all ferrous metals quickly rust in the presence of water and oxygen. At the same time, it is not always possible to regularly apply such methods of protection to these structures as rust cleaning, priming, application of paint and varnish materials. In this case, the only possible and most accessible way of surface treatment is the application of paint on rust. Some of them are water-dilutable, containing phosphoric acid. There is paint for metal and rust two-component, containing additives based on epoxy or polyurethane resins and corrosion inhibitors.

Waterborne formulations are the most environmentally friendly and cheap, but their use as "finish" coatings is possible only in cases when the surface of metal structures are not required for high decorative, and they are used in conditions with a relatively low aggressiveness of the environment. Such compositions are best applied to pre-primed surfaces. The best rust paints form coatings that maximally isolate the surface of the metal from corrosive substances, oxygen and water. They modify the chemical composition of the rust itself, which significantly slows down the destructive corrosion processes. Do not forget that, no matter how good these paint coatings are, loose rust still needs to be removed from the surface of the metal, as no paint can "tie" it and hold it for a long time.

There are many types of anti-corrosion coatings. One of the most popular products of this kind is the rust paint "Hammerite" (Hammerite). It's easy to apply because it performs several functions at the same time: it transforms the corrosion layer, is a primer and a finish coat. It is noteworthy that the Hammerite paint in several layers can be applied in one day. This paint and varnish coating provides the metal structures with a decorative look and good protection. This paint is not intended for industrial use. The best effect is achieved when applying a layer thickness of not less than 100 microns. The paints "Humereit" are able to repel moisture, because they contain silicones. This coating is made on the basis of a complex of resins designed to block rust. It consists of modified alkyds, which ensure high adhesion to metal surfaces. Quickly evaporated solvents, which are present in the paint on rust "Hammerite", contribute to its rapid drying. Glass microparticles reinforce the waterproof barrier. This paint is applied only to non-peelable surface, which was painted no less than six months before. The paint "Hammerite" is not compatible with the compositions on the bitumen base. When applied to non-ferrous metals, pre-priming is required.
