The Museum of Calligraphy in Sokolniki is a small private institution, opened not so long ago. Art itself has the same ancient roots as the writing of each people. On the territory of Russia, a museum with such an exhibition is the only one so far.

About the museum

The opening of a unique museum in Russia dedicated to the ancient art of calligraphy took place in August 2008. The private collector A.Yu. Shaburov initiated the creation of such a museum, there are not so many museums in the world, and most of them are located in China, the United Arab Emirates, Japan, Turkey, for Russia - this is a completely new principle of collecting the exposition. The museum is a member of the International Council of Museums.

The mission of the whole work, employees and management consider the formation of a healthy society that knows how to appreciate beauty and be attentive to detail.

Exposition

The museum in Sokolniki collected typical examples of a letter of European, Arab, Jewish, Chinese, Japanese calligraphy. Also rare examples of Russian Slavic ligature are presented. On the examples of exhibited works one can trace the origin and development of art. In addition to written masterpieces, they show accessories for their creation, come from the past and modern adaptations.

Most popular among visitors are hand-written books, the release of which is limited to a single copy. The pearl of the book collection is the Museum of Calligraphy in Sokolniki, considers the handwritten Constitution of the Russian Federation, created by the masters of the National Union of Calligraphers.

The exposition presents rare examples of works by eminent artists of their craft and their students, who are just beginning their way in art, and those who have already proved themselves successful work.

Public events

In 2009 the Museum of Calligraphy in Sokolniki took part in the eleventh Moscow festival of museums of international level "Intermuseum-2009", founded and held the first all-Russian contest "Holy Scripture in Calligraphy".

September 2010 The Contemporary museum of calligraphy in Sokolniki marked a large-scale event held in Veliky Novgorod. From 10 to 12 September, the third International Exhibition of Calligraphy was held, which was held near the walls of the ancient Novgorod Kremlin. It aroused great interest among the citizens, during the period of its visit about 37 thousand people.

In 2012, the next International Exhibition of Calligraphic Art took place in Moscow and lasted 45 days (November 1 - December 15). Exhibits were presented by masters from 44 countries, their total number was 143 unique masterpieces. Over 42 thousand people came to see and join the beauty of the letter.

2015 continued the tradition of communicating at the international level within the framework of the traditional exhibition of calligraphic art. This time, the Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy in Sokolniki gathered participants from 52 countries who brought in 201 a picture created in the genre of calligraphic art. For the exhibition, a common theme was chosen - "Meditation on the Motherland".

The next stage of the international exhibition activity will be held in 2017, the planned period of carrying out - from September 1 to 10 in Sokolniki Park. The theme of this stage is "For Life". To participate in the exhibition are invited not only the masters who provided their work for the exhibition, but also new faces. Calligraphy is based on the individuality and versatility of the master's personality, and therefore each work is unique in its uniqueness.

Master classes

The Museum of Calligraphy in Sokolniki during the period of exhibitions and other events holds author's master classes. In the process of mastering the secrets of the letter each participant can get acquainted, communicate with the master, learn a lot about the ancient art and make his first steps in it.

Each of the already passed master classes was conducted by a specialist in any direction of calligraphy. So, in 2016 the participants tried their strength with the help of brushes and brashpin under the guidance of the St. Petersburg illustrator of the artist Daria Birulina.

Many people remember the experience of creating a stained glass mosaic, which was held in March 2015 by the artist-stained glass Elena Nechiporenko. Participants learned about the technique of creating stained glass, its features and could see the calligraphic painting of stained glass.

The master classes with the participation of recognized world masters were conducted in a crowded and bright way. In April 2016, Japanese guests Sauri Ishimaru, Sasida Takefus, Hirose Shoko and others spent several days in Moscow and gave lessons for visitors. In the course of the classes, participants learned some laws of creating a composition, gained experience in working with brushes and ink.

The Museum of Calligraphy in Sokolniki offers organization of master classes and excursions for children and adults. To do this, it is necessary to gather at least 10 people into the group and agree with the staff of the institution. The event lasts 90 minutes, during which a sightseeing tour is conducted and a thematic lesson is given, in which the basics of art are learned in practice.

New master classes are planned for the upcoming international exhibition, which will be held in September 2017, the venue will be the park "Sokolniki". The Museum of Calligraphy promises a lot of interesting things and invites you to visit the extended exposition and master classes, where you can spend time in communication with many masters of this art.

Reviews

Active educational work is the Museum of Calligraphy in Sokolniki. Visitors' reviews tell about the unusual exhibits exhibited and their own surprise at the possibilities of this art. Many appreciated the beauty of the strokes, the skilful writing of individual characters and whole books. Those who managed to see the manuscript lists of the Koran, the Torah, Japanese prints, reported that they did not even suspect how subtle the work could be. A lot of positive feedback was expressed about the master classes of the museum, where the staff introduces children not only with the technique of writing, but also with materials, tools, and history.

Negative feedback was expressed about the location of the museum, which is away from popular routes and the very premises, which is a common pavilion in which few people can suspect the existence of the exposition. Some visitors were dissatisfied with the staff of the museum, who did not allow to see the exposition in the company with compact vehicles.

To get to the museum, you should drive to Sokolniki station and go through the park avenues to the building. Passage by car is allowed through the third Radziy Prospekt (for this part of the park there is a statutory permit).
