Motion sensor: convenience and safety

A motion sensor is a device designed to detect movement in the area of operation of the device. As the main device it uses a pyroelectric sensor. The principle of its operation is based on increasing the voltage at the output of the sensor when the level of infrared radiation is increased . That is, with a local increase in temperature, which may indicate the appearance of a person in the room, the sensor activates the equipment connected to it.

Motion sensors are used for different purposes. They, for example, are installed in the doorways together with the lighting lamps in order to save electricity at a time when there is no one on the landing. In addition, such sensors are used for the alarm device. They are located along the perimeter of the protected premises, and they send a signal to the attendant's desk if they notice any movement. The same principle applies to a camera with a motion sensor that will turn on when a live object is in its focus.

However, such a sensor does not guarantee operation in 100% of cases. So, if a person passes by the sensor in the winter time in thick clothes, the device may not be activated. This is because the temperature of a person's clothing is approximately equal to the ambient temperature. There are other ways to avoid triggering the sensor.

After purchase, you can independently connect the motion sensor, following the instructions attached to it. You can configure various settings by setting it. But in the store, when choosing a motion sensor, pay attention to its main characteristics.

Light sensitivity - this characteristic is possessed by sensors that do not work under conditions where lighting is sufficient and without additional illumination. If, for example, you set the sensitivity switch to the position of one hundred lux, the motion sensor will activate the bulb only at night. If you put the regulator in the maximum position provided by the design, the sensor will operate at any time of day.

It is also important that the sensor has a significant field of view. Usually enough 15 meters, but there are also models with a greater detection distance.

The response speed is also an important characteristic, which is tuned to the sensor. If the object moves too fast, the sensor will not have time to feel its presence. On the contrary, if the object moves slowly, it will merge with the background, and the sensor will not be able to detect it either. Therefore, you need to choose a golden mean so that the sensor detects not only slow, but also fast moving objects.

Now consider the form factors of the sensors. Most of the market sensors are attached to the wall, so their viewing angle is between 120 and 180 degrees. There are also such models that provide observation in 360 degrees. Usually they are fixed on the ceiling of the premises entrusted to them.

Now you can choose a motion sensor for you, it's enough to proceed from the purpose for which you choose it, and you will not go wrong.
