Metro "Vyborgskaya": history and our days

In the historic district of the city of St. Petersburg, called "Vyborg Side", in 1975 the metro station "Vyborgskaya" was opened. Despite the fact that its lobby does not have a magnificent finish, like the pavilions of the first section of Avtovo - "Ploshchad Vosstaniya", "Vyborgskaya" also has interesting design features. The station is interesting not only for its underground facilities, but also for external execution, as well as for the longest pedestrian tunnel in the city. Most recently, the station was reopened after a long overhaul and functions smoothly, taking over 800,000 passengers a month. What are the history and design features of Vyborg? How does the station work these days, what land transport is attached to it?

History of the station "Vyborgskaya"

The site "Lenin Square" - "Forest", which included the metro station "Vyborgskaya", was opened on April 22, 1975. In the project it was called "Baburin Lane", but later received its modern name in honor of the area where its lobby is located. The pavilion was designed by the architects VP Shuvalova, VG Khilchenko and AS Getskin and is one of the few preserved glass subway buildings. Since the 70s of the last century on the balcony over the incline of the vestibule ornamental plants are planted.

Underground structures of the station "Vyborgskaya"

The metro station "Vyborgskaya" is located at a depth of 67 meters. The walls of the station are made of travertine, and the floors are lined with gray granite. The end wall is decorated with a bas-relief depicting the workers of the Vyborg side, who participated in the 1917 uprising. The station hall is connected to the escalators by a transition resembling the Latin letter S. Similar connections are also available at the stations "Primorskaya" and "Ligovsky Prospekt". In the 90 years, the three extreme passages of the hall were closed for service needs. The entrances to the office premises are protected by metal grilles.

Repair of the station "Vyborgskaya" in 2015

February 7, 2015 metro station "Vyborgskaya" was closed for major repairs for a period of 11 months. During this time, the waterproofing was completely restored, obsolete lamps were updated, all three escalators were set up and cosmetic corrections were made. On December 25 of the same year, Vyborgskaya was solemnly reopened and put into operation. Passengers who used land transport for the whole year tied to neighboring stations were greatly relieved, because until now the most convenient way to get to business centers and other places of work near the station "Vyborgskaya" is the metro. Repair, nevertheless, according to the head of the St. Petersburg subway, is needed for all stations whose age exceeds 40 years. In 2016, the stations "Elizarovskaya" and "Vasileostrovskaya" were closed for renovation.

Vyborg tunnel - the longest pedestrian tunnel in St. Petersburg

The longest pedestrian crossing in St. Petersburg, tied to the metro station "Vyborgskaya", was opened on November 4, 1983. The beginning of the tunnel is located inside the station itself, and the exit is not far from the LOMO checkpoint. A long and intricate underground passage immediately overgrew with a huge number of legends and mysterious stories. Some Petersburgers believed that the tunnel was built as an air-raid shelter, and some even believed in the existence of secret routes between the railway and the metro hidden in the crossing. Nevertheless, the appointment of the Vyborg tunnel turned out to be more prosaic - earlier such a transition, necessary for passage to the railway tracks and plants, already existed, but because of the weather conditions it soon deteriorated, so its more stable modern variant had to be built deeper.

Station "Vyborg" in our days

Despite the fact that "Vyborgskaya" is located in relative distance from the city center, full of entertainment facilities, not far from it there are many interesting places for cultural recreation. In particular, guests of the city should visit the Palace of Culture "Vyborg", where there is a large theater hall with an excellent repertoire.
