Medal Ushakov: history of creation and description

Ushakov's medal was a very popular award of the Navy of the USSR of the Second World War and subsequent times. The history of its creation and description is devoted to this article.

The medal was introduced as a combat award by a decision of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on March 3, 1944. After this decree has undergone many changes, and only at the end of March 1980 the final model of the medal was officially approved.

Regulation on the award

Admiral Ushakov's medal was approved for the award for courage and courage shown in the defense of the motherland in the sea theaters of military operations.

This medal is awarded to both soldiers and sailors, sergeants and corporals of the Navy, and naval border troops.

The medal really needs to be earned. Awarding the Medal Ushakov, the command is guided by many conditions. Here are some merits for which the medal is awarded:

  • Protection of the maritime state border ;
  • Fulfillment of the combat missions assigned by the leadership in the Navy units of the Navy;

History of the creation of the medal

Ushakov's medal is actually an analogue of the infantry medal "For Courage", only it is awarded to the personnel of the Navy.

Nikolai Gerasimovich Kuznetsov, the People's Commissar of the USSR Navy, initiated and approved the medal. The final decision on the establishment of the medal was taken by the Red Army Commission. At the end of July 1945, according to the decree of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, five US Navy sailors were awarded the Ushakov Medal.

There are cases when the medal was re-awarded. Twice medal was received by PK Kladiev, VP Borisov, AP Fedorenko.

Description of the military award

Ushakov's medal is made in the form of a circle, the diameter of which is 35 mm, in the center is the image of Admiral Ushakov, which is framed by points along the circumference (there are 84 in all). At the top of the medal in the circle there is an inscription "ADMIRAL USHAKOV". Between these two words is a five-pointed star. At the bottom of the medal are two laurel branches.

The award is made of high-quality silver (925-th test), the final sample along with the shoe weighs about 35 grams.

If we talk about the medal ribbon, then it is made of silk fabric of blue color. On the edges along the tape are white strips (2 mm each). The total width of the medal band is 25 mm.

The medal has two options. The first was the main, they were awarded in the war years. After the medal was somewhat modernized. The second option was awarded already in the 80s of the last century.
