"Mad Dogs": actors, story and story of creating a cult picture

Perhaps, one of the most famous paintings by Quentin Tarantino is the "Pulp Fiction" tape, which in 1994 became the owner of the main award of the Cannes Film Festival. It was then that the young cinematographer acquired an army of admirers, many of whom had previously heard nothing of their idol.

Spectators began to show an active interest in the filmography of Tarantino and paid special attention to his debut work, released a couple of years earlier - the film "Mad Dogs". The actors of this criminal thriller subsequently gained great popularity and more than once took part in other films of the director.

About the plot

At the beginning of this story, eight men rest in a small cafe, talking about business. It's about the masters White, Blue, Pink, Blond, Brown, Orange, Big Boss Joe Cabbote and nice guy Eddie Cabbote. Men are planning a large and risky robbery, agreeing that the survivors will then gather in an abandoned warehouse. So, the characters begin the operation, but it passes extremely unsuccessfully - it becomes clear that the traitor has got into the company. Bandits are forced to suspect each other, but they want to achieve truth. This is the plot of the movie "Mad Dogs", the actors of which brilliantly coped with the roles assigned to them.

The origin of the project

The script for the thriller Tarantino wrote, as an employee of the usual American video distribution. The guy did not expect to get a substantial budget for his picture, believing that he would have to shoot it for an inexpensive 16-millimeter black and white film. He also decided in advance with the people who will play in the project "Mad Dogs". Actors, by the way, were completely unknown to the general public: relatives and friends of Quentin.

A promising cinematographer managed to find a novice producer, who was supposed to help him with organizational issues. It was Lawrence Bender. The further development of events depended on the will of chance. Producer talked with his teacher, mentioning that he met a guy who wrote a brilliant script. Lawrence noted that the main role will be played by a company far from the world of cinema. When the teacher asked whom the newly-minted partners would like to see at the head of the cast, Bender admitted that they would be happy if the central image was assigned to such an actor as Harvey Keitel.

Beginning of work

Incredibly, Lawrence's interlocutor reported that his wife is familiar with Harvey, and if she is interested in the Tarantino scenario, she will invite celebrities to get to know him. A few days later the partners received a call from a well-known actor who said that he had read the script and would like to discuss it.

It turned out that Harvey Keitel was delighted with Tarantino's work - he was ready not only to take on one of the leading roles, but also to act as the producer of the project "Mad Dogs". Actors who played the main roles in the film, were accustomed to him also thanks to the idol and a new friend of Quentin and Lawrence. Rumors of a potential hit broke up fairly quickly, and he received a budget of 1.2 million dollars. By the standards of Hollywood, this is very small, but still much more than the beginning screenwriter and director could have imagined.

Key characters

Soon the long-awaited shooting of the movie "Mad Dogs" began. The actors got very colorful - Tim Roth, Steve Buscemi, Lawrence Tierney, Edward Bunker, Chris Penn and others. It is noteworthy that David Duchovny was auditioned for one of the roles, and two years later he began to play the main part in the series "The X-Files".

Tarantino himself was not only the director and the author of the script, but also the performer of the role of Mr. Brown in the tape "Mad Dogs". Michael Madsen, in turn, portrayed a tough guy who got the nickname Mr. Blondin. The already mentioned Keitel appeared in the image of Mr. Bely. The whole team was dressed in black suits and white shirts.

Premiere

The production of the cult thriller took less than half a year, but in the end, film critics highly appreciated the movie "Mad Dogs." The year 1992 was marked by a great triumph for the director gaining momentum, after all, his debut was noticed, and he instantly gained a star status. Especially the audience noted an unusual manner of narration, which previously was not very popular among Tarantino's colleagues. In the future, he took a lot of masterpieces, but this great way started with "Mad Dogs!"
