Lubrication of skis at home

Fans of winter sports and ski walks know that the necessary condition for the proper operation of the sports equipment is its preparation before use. Regular lubrication of skis makes it easier to slide on the snow surface and protects them from rapid wear. In the lubrication all cross-country skis are needed , regardless of the material of production: both plastic and wooden.

Types of greases

The most common lubricant for skiing is paraffin. They are produced in bars of standard size, but differ in price category. In the assortment of foreign manufacturers liquid wax is found with tubes. It should be taken into account that in the central strip and in southern Russia in the winter season, air temperature can fluctuate significantly, and this is one of the factors affecting slip. Therefore, in the arsenal it is desirable to have several types of paraffins, intended for use in different temperature ranges. Because paraffins are related to sliding lubricants, they process the nasal and heel parts of skis. For the shoe (central part) used to hold ointments.

Lubrication of skis with paraffin is especially widely used in amateur sports with short training and trips for short distances of up to 15 km. In a professional environment, very different requirements. Here skiers use more expensive means (accelerators). They can be represented in various variations, in the form of aerosols, powders, emulsions, etc.

Equipment and accessories for lubrication

In order to properly process skis with ointments and paraffin, additional additional means are needed:

  • Special iron for the application and distribution of paraffin. At home, you can use the usual old iron, but with caution, and set the minimum mode of heating.
  • Plastic scraper to remove the old paraffin layer.
  • Brush with coarse bristles, mainly nylon. With its help, the sliding surface of skis is more carefully cleaned.
  • Sandpaper is used to strip the shoe .
  • To lubricate the skis to ensure maximum glide, their surface is polished with a non-woven material. These can be old things made of capron, wool or felt.

The process of preparing skis

Lubrication of plastic skis is carried out according to the following scheme: first remove the remains of the old layer of lubrication with a scraper. Then the entire surface in the nasal and calcaneal parts and with abrasive paper in the shoe are thoroughly cleaned with a brush. Only after that, the sliding surface of the skis is treated with paraffin, and the shoe - with the ointment. For maximum results, paraffin can be applied in several layers. This method is used to prepare professional racing skis. In amateur sports, a single condition is the single lubrication of skis with sliding ointments (paraffins). Finally, the sliding surface of the skis is subject to polishing.

For cooling and fixing the lubricant skis are taken out to the street, for about 30 minutes. After this time they will be ready for use.
