Historical reference

The first fortress on the site of the present palace was built by the ruler of Mazovia - Prince Boleslaw II still in the distant 1294-1313. At the beginning of the XVII century, this architectural object acquired the current form. Then, under the decree of the Polish king - Sigismund Vaza Italian architects built a five-cornered palace, consisting of two floors, in the early Baroque style. Later, Vladislav IV attached a gallery-loggia to the castle from the garden and Vladislavovskaya tower.

Unfortunately, the palace was heavily plundered during the Swedish invasion in the 17th century and the Northern War. The renovation of the dilapidated structure is associated with the name of the King - Stanislaw August Poniatowski. With him, a southern wing (made in 1765-1771) was attached to the castle, creating also interiors that were kept in the style of late baroque and classicism. Stanislav Augustus, being a great fan of art, established here an atelier, which was directed by the artist Bachcharelli. At that time, the famous Royal Library was also built.

In the interval between the First and Second World War the palace was completely restored, and here the president of that time - Ignacy Mostsitsky - was established. But all the restoration work was in vain. With the outbreak of World War II, the palace was mined by Nazi troops and mercilessly destroyed. Only thanks to the bold work of art historians before the bombing from the palace was extracted most of the exhibits, as well as dismantled doors, fireplaces, moldings, sculptures.

After the war, the place where the castle used to be was empty until 1971, when the Sejm finally decided to restore the palace, taking advantage of the preserved fragments, pictures and photographs, possibly giving it the form that it had in the beginning of the XVII century. Restorative work continued until 1988.

As a result, the invaluable secular treasures of the castle could find a second life in a newly built dwelling. In 1984 the Royal Castle was already opened as a museum, where expositions of different periods of the history of Poland are placed .
