Italian writer Salgari Emilio: biography, books

Emilio Salgari (1862-1911) is considered one of the key, most famous writers of Italy. The author of more than two hundred stories and novels in the genre of adventure, he made a significant contribution to the history of world culture. His fascinating works occupy an honorable place in the treasuries of children's and adult libraries. The power of his work was admired by writers Gabriel Garcia-Marquez, Umberto Eco, Carlos Fuentes, composers Giacomo Puccini and Petro Mascagni, as well as the titan of Italian filmmaking Federico Fellini.

Youth of the future writer. Inspiration. Maritime School

In his youth Salgari Emilio was incredibly impressed by Thomas Main-Read, Gustave Emar and James Fenimore Cooper. Even in those young years he took a well-considered decision that he would become a writer. In addition, in his dreams, the young genius only thought that about adventures. Emilio wanted to be a strong and confident captain on some ship, so I decided to study at the Maritime School in Verona. Unfortunately, or fortunately for the admirers of his literary talent, the study was not up to Emilio, so after a short time he left school.

The first literary successes of Salgari. Fame and recognition at home. Myths and legends

In 1883, when he turned 21, Salgari Emilio successfully debuted in the literary field. The Milan magazine La Valigia published the first story of the writer. The next step in literary success was the work of the editor in the weekly La Nuova Arena, in Verona. This publication has glorified the story "Papuans", which made Salgari Emilio popular among readers. After this, five or more works of the writer were published every year to the public. They were the whole series of adventures, which did not let the reader to the last page. The books of Salgari became known in the native land of the writer, in Italy. His extreme unreasonableness in the financial aspect and due assessment of his works played into the hands of unscrupulous publishers who did not miss the chance to rob the unfortunate.

"Secrets of the black jungle" begins the cycle "Sandokan". The novel was published in early 1887 under a different name ("Ganga Duschiteli"), as an addition to the Italian magazine Il Telegrafo. "Black Corsair" (or in the Italian original "Il corsaro negro") was published in 1898. Times of the heyday of the pirate fishery, the Caribbean ... In the center of the action of Emilio Roccanera nicknamed "The Black Corsair", he is also called "Lord of Ventimiglia". The cause of his life is the revenge of Duke Van Gould, governor of Maracaibo, for the death of his blood brothers. In the accomplices, he chooses a few glorious pirates of that era. Among his gangs are Henry Morgan and François Olona. Roccanera is not going to stop until revenge is realized.

Revenge Emilio finds no end in several novels of the cycle "Black Corsair":

  • "Queen of the Caribbean", published in 1901.

  • "Yolanda, daughter of the Black Corsair" - 1905.

  • "The son of a red corsair" - 1908.

The novel was so popular that several times it was embodied in cinematography. In the 1920s, a series of silent films appeared on the screens, directed by Vitale Di Stefano. In 1937, Amleto Palermi created a movie masterpiece, inviting to play the main role of Ciro Verrati, the Italian champion in fencing. In 1944, Spain began to display a story about a vengeful corsair. Chano Urueta directed a decent adaptation of the work of Salgari. In 32 years, in 1976, Sergio Sollima presented his contemporaries with a vision of history. The format of the series was presented in 1999 in Italy by the company Mondo TV. 26 episodes of the animated series "The Black Corsair" delight the little spectators.

"The Queen of the Caribbean". Short description

The Queen of the Caribs (La regina del Caraibi) is a continuation of the storyline described in the "Black Corsair". After the escape of Van Gould from Gibraltar, the Black Corsair, after uniting with the pirates Van Stiller, Carmo and Moko, begins his quest. In Puerto Princes he is informed that Van Gould is in Veracruz. He fights against the Spanish soldiers besieging him. Yara, a young Indian woman tries to help the pirates, but the Spaniards still manage to injure the Black Corsair. His ship is attacked by two Spanish frigates. Lucky, he escapes from the trap to Veracruz, but does not catch up with Van Gould, who fled to Florida. The Corsair's assistant, Morgan, is chasing him. Van Gould explodes a storehouse with gunpowder and dies. The corsair is thrown over the side of the ship, with his pirates, he wanders around the swamps. They are caught by the Indians, whose queen was the daughter of Van Gould. After receiving her forgiveness, Corsair marries her and sails to Europe.
