The sultans, deprived of tribute from principalities, increased taxes and levies from the population, which caused the growth of popular discontent. It began one of the longest and bloodiest wars that the Dutch had ever waged in Indonesia. In 1873 the Dutch landing landed near the capital Ace, but the conquerors came across courageous resistance.
