In disputes truth is born: the author. Is there any truth in the dispute?

It is not known why, but people are not only mistaken, but also arguing. The regulars of numerous forums and social networks are largely engaged in verbal battles: everyone defends his opinion, sometimes with foam at his mouth. In battles precious time and precious nerves are wasted, but the participants do not lose heart: after all, everyone knows that truth is born in a dispute, for which it is not shameful to suffer. Nevertheless, there are certain subtleties that turn out open scolding into polemics. Let's talk about the positive and negative aspects of such a concept as a dispute, and define its role in the life of society.

Fairy Tale is a lie

This phrase is very common - every person, probably, once in his life repeated it, putting a direct, ironic or even sarcastic meaning, because not every discussion can boast such a remarkable result. Most often, neither its subject nor the composition of participants imply such success: in disputes, truth is born only when the conversation is objective, and the interlocutors are not only "in the subject", but also well-mannered to listen to each other's opinion .

Perhaps the most impressive number of born truths are disputes in the field of science. Each proposed theory or research is a kind of argument, during the exchange of which new knowledge appears. Most likely, this was what the ancients had in mind, saying that the truth is born in a dispute.

Socrates, to whom the aphorism is attributed, hardly considered it so in fact. The famous philosopher rightly believed that the dispute, in fact, is nothing more than an attempt to impose his opinion on the opponent, to force him to recognize his own rightness. But human knowledge is far from perfect. What truth can be born in the dispute between two representatives of the ancient world, one of whom believes that the earth rests on three whales and the other that on four turtles?

It is known that Socrates opposed the dispute - dialogue, and placed on him the appropriate hopes, recommending to talk with a person and not to contact the crowd.

What can I bet?

If you think about it, then the subject of discussion is of great importance. The more complex and specific it is, the greater the truth in asserting that truth is born in a dispute: the uninitiated will not come to mind to discuss nuclear physics or molecular biology. To conduct conversations on such topics, you need to have relevant knowledge. And in order to master them, it is necessary to have a considerable mind, which, in fact, plays a decisive role in the process of the birth of something worthwhile.

Unfortunately, the majority of disputes in which one has to participate or observe from the outside is unlikely to be particularly meaningful.

And what is better to remain silent

Albert Einstein believed that politics is a much more complicated subject than the theory of relativity. In this light, it is not at all clear why there are so few people willing to discuss an easy-going theory, and large specialists in international relations - 99% of the adult population of the country.

That's where the phrase "the truth is born in disputes" sounds like a real mockery. It is impossible to imagine a more fruitless and meaningless pastime. Is there anything more strange in the world than the fact that thousands of adults spend their lives trying to convince thousands of others that they are right, knowing in advance that it is absolutely impossible?

In addition to mutual insults and grievances, nothing in such disputes is born, and can not be born: after all, people who are not only incompetent, but also absolutely not influencing the situation, participate in them.

To positively answer the question whether truth is born in a dispute, three things are important:

  • The subject matter of the dispute;

  • list of participants;

  • Their competence.

Born in a dispute

However, a civilized dispute may have one more result, which is sometimes even better than the truth, and the name to it is a compromise. There are areas of life in which the notorious truth does not exist at all, and if it is, then "no one knows". Everything that relates to love, marriage, parenting periodically causes people to cross invisible blades - and completely in vain.

There are things in which individual characteristics and preferences are the decisive factor. Here, it is not necessary to seek the truth, but the ability to negotiate - this ability distinguishes thinking beings from stubborn rams. It's a pity that not everyone understands this.

The Olympic principle

To argue that truth is born in disputes is hardly always just, but at the same time sometimes participate in such an event "not only harmful but also useful," as satirists say.

Even if the exchange of arguments itself does not lead to a positive result, the need to argue your opinion will help to bring thoughts into order, to find faults in their own logical constructions. In the end, even the conclusion about the pointlessness of the dispute on this topic may also not be superfluous in the process of obtaining a valuable life experience. As they say, from all it is possible to learn lessons - the main thing, not to go in cycles on already passed material.

Thus, saying: "Truth is born in a dispute", the author got excited. Such a result, too, can not be ruled out, but with a fair number of reservations.

Ethics above all

As in any other discussion about the abyss of human communication, we again have to state the trivial truths about the importance of mutual respect, the unacceptability of the transition to insults, the need to find the strength to appreciate and accept the opinion of another person, even if you do not share it.

The rules of behavior humanity has invented not in vain. There are such areas in which the rule "the truth is born in disputes" does not work and will never work. Therefore, in a decent society, it is not accepted to discuss politics, religion and football. If you adhere to the elementary rules, any conversation, even the hottest, will not make you bitterly regret it after when the passions subsided and the opponents will recount the losses. No wonder they say that at the very moment when the interlocutors feel anger towards each other, the dispute should end, and not vice versa.
