Hydrogen As Fuel for Conventional Vehicles

However, hydrogen engines for conventional cars are not quite safe to operate, especially in the storage of hydrogen and its supply to the combustion chamber. After all, as everyone knows from the initial classes on chemistry lessons, hydrogen, when interacting with oxygen, forms such a compound as an explosive gas that is explosive. This is not yet possible to create full hydrogen vehicles. Although British scientists do not think so.

Using scientific achievements, they developed a new methodology and technology. According to it, hydrogen is contained in a special container (tank) whose dimensions are no more than 3-4 microns, in addition, these fuel cells have a porous structure. And hydrogen is fed to them not in pure form, but in the form of hydrides. And with a slight heating of fuel cells (capsules) from micropores, hydrogen begins to be released. Thus, scientists managed to develop an even more realistic model of the hydrogen engine, which, with appropriate refinement, is fully capable of mass production and is viable in competition with internal combustion engines. But there are a number of difficulties related to the technical side. Firstly, it is necessary to quickly heat the desired fuel cell (capsule) and also the ability to transfer hydrogen from each capsule to the power supply system by the engine.

However, at the first stage, scientists plan to use this technology on conventional cars with internal combustion engines. For this purpose an additional tank with such hydrogen capsules will be placed on the cars. And the hydrogen gas itself will not be the main fuel, but an auxiliary one. Such methods are already being used for bioethanol in a number of countries. Similarly, with hydrogen, its part in the fuel mixture will gradually increase until it replaces the fuel completely. This allows us to use modern cars without any restrictions with a little refinement, and by gradually increasing the number of hydrogen cars we can organize and build up the related infrastructure. The first tests of this car are scheduled for the first half of 2012.
