How is myeloma treated in Israel?

Myeloma is also a plasmacytoma or myeloma is an oncological disease in which bone marrow damage occurs.

Cancer cells in this case develop in plasma (a liquid component of blood containing platelets, white blood cells and erythrocytes). In the bone marrow stem cells are produced, which turn into one of the above types of blood cells.

As a result of the development of myeloma in the human body, the production of antibodies that are capable of resisting various infections is significantly reduced.

According to statistics, this disease usually occurs in mature or old age, most often in men.

Symptoms of myeloma include:

  • Pain in the bones, most often the head, spine, pelvis, sternum;
  • Shortness of breath, weakness, frequent bleeding, dizziness;
  • Symptoms of the defeat of the central nervous system (severe pain, weakness and numbness of the legs), due to the fact that the affected vertebrae squeeze large nerves;
  • Disorders of kidney function;
  • Lack of protection against infections, in particular pneumonia.

It is only natural that the treatment of myeloma in Israel requires a qualitative diagnosis course, which includes the following activities:

  • Anamnesis and physical examinations;
  • Laboratory diagnostic methods;
  • Extraction of a sample of tumor tissue (biopsy) for further histological examination;
  • Immunological research;
  • Radiography;
  • Computed tomography ;
  • Magnetic resonance imaging.

In addition, in order to monitor the treatment of myeloma in Israel, blood tests are performed to study the number of red blood cells, calcium, paraprotein in it. Also, the study of the kidneys is conducted.

Since myeloma is a disease that affects the entire body, the most effective is a comprehensive approach, which includes several methods of treatment. To date, the most popular and effective in the treatment of oncology are: chemotherapy, radiation therapy, surgical intervention.

Nevertheless, to date, the best result in the treatment of myeloma in Israel demonstrates chemotherapy in combination with the intake of corticosteroid hormones. Patients may be prescribed drugs such as: Melphalan, Cyclophosphamide, Vincristine, Cyclophosphamide, Doxorubicin.

Depending on the condition of the patient, high-dose chemotherapy may be recommended. An important detail is that before starting myeloma treatment with high-dose chemotherapy, a small number of stem cells are taken from the patient to restore the hematopoietic system.

In addition, with the diagnosis of myeloma, a course of biotherapy can be prescribed, which consists in taking interferon, a protein that makes cells immune to viruses. This type of treatment involves subcutaneous injections.

Mono-channel antibodies can also be used that can detect cancer cells and stop their spread and development.

Radiation therapy in the treatment of myeloma, as a rule, is used to relieve the symptoms of this disease. Radiated or painful areas of bones are exposed to irradiation.

Surgical treatment of myeloma also refers to palliative care, that is , it is aimed at improving the patient's condition. For this purpose, operations are carried out in order to:

  • Removal of malignant tumors that press on internal organs;
  • Prevention of fractures and strengthening of bones.

In addition, in some cases, blood transfusion is suggested for the treatment of myeloma with its subsequent purification (plasmapheresis) from paraproteins by means of special equipment.

All these methods of treatment allow to achieve, if not complete recovery of the patient, then at least significantly to alleviate his condition.
