"Hendel" - rose climbing: description, planting and care

Climbing roses - a luxurious decoration of any garden or garden area. Delicious shrubs are pleased with the variety of shapes and shades of inflorescences, blossom the whole season and are able to disguise small errors in landscape design. But often they refuse to grow such flowers, fearing that a whimsical climbing rose will not be well-behaved in a difficult Russian climate. In this sense, the rose "hendel", clinging and quite cold-resistant - is a real find for summer residents. What is so remarkable about this sort of roses? How to grow such climbing roses for Moscow suburbs or sites with similar climatic conditions?

History and description of the variety

"Hendel" - rose-klayber, deduced in the mid-60-ies of the last century in Ireland. Its name was given to a new breed in honor of the famous classic - English and German composer GF Handel.

How does the rose "Handel" look like? The description of this variety can be easily found in the catalogs: an adult plant is a shrub that is a fairly stiff long shoots, covered with dark green leaves and goblet half-flower flowers growing in inflorescences or singly. This variety is known as the world's first climbing rose, the inflorescences of which have a two-color petals: white-cream flowers with crimson or rich pink edges. With due care, the rose "hendel" (stumpy) grows up to 3-3.5 m in height and can grow to a width of up to 2 m.

This variety has a high frost resistance and shows an average level of immunity to various diseases of the flora. In addition, the "handel" is a rose of the repair type, that is, it refers to plants that can continuously blossom several times a year. Thanks to all the above qualities, this variety is actively used in landscape design for decorating arbors, arches, fences, and for creating an original garden decoration - a flowering column.

Methods of reproduction

Undoubtedly, the most reliable method to get a luxurious clinging rose on your site is to purchase a ready-made strong seedling in the store. But if, for some reason, it is necessary to grow a rose from an adult plant, what are the best ways to propagate a shrub of a cultivar "hendel" on its site? The rose of this variety can be successfully grown in two known ways: by cuttings or by means of a layering. You can use other methods, for example, grafting to a finished bush of a different kind, but they are more troublesome and not so reliable.

Seedling by the method of tapping the shoot of an adult shrub is obtained in a fairly simple way:

  • Next to the selected lower strong shoot of the rose, it is necessary to prepare a well-groove, pour a mixture of humus and sand, then place the shoot in the hole so that the upper kidney is above the surface of the soil.
  • Sprinkle the middle part of the shoot in the hole. After that, the future seedling should be provided with regular watering, in time to remove the weeds.
  • In spring, the wintering sapling should be carefully separated from the main bush and transplanted.

The most common way of propagation of roses, including sticks, is cuttings. The formation of the seedling from the cuttings is carried out in several stages:

  • Cuttings should be cut from the middle part of the shoot, leaving at least 4-5 kidneys.
  • It should start in mid-July. From an adult plant, it is necessary to make short cuts in such a way that the upper part is cut straight, above the bud of the plant. The lower one is cut under the kidney approximately at an angle of 45 °. Do this with a sharp pruner or other garden tool.

  • The top sheets are neatly trimmed, the lower ones are completely removed.
  • Each drop is planted in a pot filled with a mixture of soil and sand. From above it is necessary to cover with a transparent cap (small jar) and place the future seedling in the lighted warm room.
  • After the appearance of the first small leaves, the caps can be removed. Before planting in the open ground in spring cuttings should be watered and 1-2 times a month to fertilize complex mineral fertilizers.

How to choose a suitable location on the site?

What conditions are required for the stump shrub "Hendel"? Rose is a very thermophilic plant, sensitive to direct rays of the sun. Proceeding from this, the place on the site where it is planned to plant a climbing rose must meet the following requirements:

  • You can not plant a rose in a place where it will be under the scorching sun every day - this will lead to burns of the leaves and "burning out" the color of the petals. It will be necessary to choose the place where the rose will be in the morning under the sun, and after dinner in shading, necessarily protected from the cold north wind and frequent drafts.
  • Nearby necessarily there should be an empty place where the bush can be laid and sheltered for the winter.
  • It is necessary to think in advance of the support of the plant. For example, it is better to install the gazebo or ground-trellis in advance. If it is supposed to plant a stumpy rose near the building, the bush itself should be located at a distance of at least 1 meter from the nearest wall. This is to ensure that the rhizome of the rose is not flooded with rainwater.

Preliminary preparation of soil

It is best that the climbing roses take root in a loose, fertile soil with a low or neutral acidity. Therefore, before planting the plant, it is necessary to take care that the soil meets these conditions: mix with compost or sand for looseness, and if necessary, reduce the acidity level by adding the right amount of dolomite flour or ash. Further you will need:

  • Prepare the holes for planting. The distance between two holes must be at least 1 meter in order to fit in a row.
  • To introduce a complex of mineral fertilizers or reparted manure.
  • Put the drain on the bottom.

Landing in the ground

Before planting a rose in the country or in the garden, you need to determine what time is considered the most successful for transplanting into open soil. In the southern regions, early autumn is considered to be a good time: before frost, the plant has time to consolidate itself in the earth and start new roots. For garden areas located to the north, it is recommended to plant this variety of roses in the spring, in the beginning or in the middle of May, when all the leaves on the trees will finally dissolve. It is necessary to wait, when the stable warm, without sharp changes of temperature is established, and the ground will warm up not less than up to 10 ˚С.

It is necessary to carry out preliminary preparation of the seedling of the climbing rose:

  • Cut the pruner by the pruner of the above-ground part of the bush (about 1/3 of the shoot).
  • Carefully remove all weak, damaged dry roots.
  • Disinfect the root system by lowering it for 15-20 minutes in a weak pink solution of manganese and boiled water.
  • It is important not to allow the roots to dry out before being placed in the ground. You can put the roots in the wet sawdust or for a short time to stand in the mud clay mix (clay before the planting is to be washed off).

Landing in the open soil after plant preparation is carried out as follows:

  • The hole should be excavated more than the volume of the root system of the rose bush.
  • At the bottom of the hole a small earth mound is poured onto the top of which a seedling is planted so that the root neck is in the ground no less than 10-15 cm. The roots need to be straightened down the hillock.

  • Seedling should be sprinkled with soil, slightly compacted and poured with cold water. The settled soil must be filled up.
  • For the first few days, the seedling should be covered with a garden film, opening it for airing first for no more than 15 minutes a day, gradually increasing this time for hardening the plant.

Features of care

What conditions does a climbing climbing "hendel" require? Planting and care is not too complicated:

  • Do not allow the soil to dry or dry, water 1-2 times a week, according to the weather.
  • Make fertilizing with fertilizers. Before flowering of the climbing rose, while shoots grow and gain strength, it will be necessary to make fertilizers at least 5-6 times. Use for this purpose can be rotted manure or a similar complex of mineral fertilizers. During the flowering period, the plant is not required to be fed.
  • Treat insecticides against pests, prevent the solution of copper sulfate 3% of the diseases of the flora.
  • Timely pruning: not only in autumn and spring, but also if necessary to remove infected or withered branches.
  • Within a year after planting the seedling fertilizing is not necessary. But an adult plant nutrients from the ground may not be enough. Than to fertilize roses? In the spring, finally removing the winter shelter, you need to spread around the bush well overgrown cow or horse manure. Before autumn, the roses will need to gain strength for wintering, so you should make fertilization with potassium fertilizers.

How to form a bush

The method of tying up largely depends on what kind of support is grown for the "henland" rose. The comments of gardeners and the recommendations of landscape designers make it possible to single out the following simple rules for garter shoots:

  • To give a climbing rose the desired shape is quite simple, if you start to form a shrub from the very beginning, while the shoots that have grown are still quite flexible.
  • The shoot shoots are best tied in the horizontal direction - this will allow the inflorescences to grow evenly along the entire length of the bush. For the decoration of a wall or a fence, the branches are best tied in a fan-like order, for a vertical stand-alone support, the shoots can be twisted as a spiral.
  • For fixing, you should choose not a traumatic material, for example, a synthetic twine. Metal staples or wire can damage the bush branches.
  • The most effective inflorescence of the cultivar "hendel" looks on the support of white or any light shades.

Trimming

Pruning should be done regularly and in a timely manner, using well-sharpened garden tools for this. Periodic pruning during the entire garden season is carried out if it is necessary to remove the damaged, diseased or dried part of the rose bush. Cut all the faded shoots of the plant to allow for the formation of new branches and protect the lumpy rose from the diseases. All sections are made diagonally, at an angle of approximately 45 °. The entire trimming procedure must be carried out only in dry weather, with clean and dry tools.

In autumn, pruning is necessary before plant conservation for the winter. Required:

  • Shorten all the branches of the plant by about 1/3 part.
  • Remove all damaged, old, dry shoots.
  • Cut unripened shoots.

In spring, after the final removal of the covering layers, it is also necessary to prune: remove the blackened, frostbitten, dry and broken branches.

Important! After cutting, the tools should be rinsed with manganese dehydrator or hydrogen peroxide and thoroughly dried.

Preparation of a climbing rose for wintering

Despite the fact that the brand "hendel" is declared as cold-resistant, this climbing rose is also required to be sheltered for wintering. It is necessary to do this in dry weather in the absence of a strong wind:

  • Carry out preliminary pruning, it is also desirable to cut off all the leaves. Cut off all the cropped material.
  • Soak the ground, mulch with peat. The surface of the earth on which the rose will winter is laid out with a "litter" - dry leaves or lapnika.
  • Carefully remove the branches from the support and lay on the "litter".
  • Tie all the weaving branches with twine.
  • Top with sawdust or lapnika.
  • Carefully wrap the garden film or other covering material. Between the ground and the cover layers, it is necessary to leave an air layer. For example, lay out the film on the garden arcs.

How to open roses after winter

It would be superfluous to recall that it is safe to cover a clinging rose for a successful wintering - this is only half the case. An important condition under which "henel" will be for many years rejoice with strong bush and lush flowering is to open the overwintered roses in the spring. How and when to do it?

  • It is not recommended to keep the rose until late spring: without the sun and airing the branches and roots will begin to rot.
  • The shelter should be removed depending on specific weather conditions. It is best to open roses gradually, first removing the upper layers (lapnik, branches) in early-mid-March. The top layer of the covering material can be removed when the stable air temperature is not lower than 10 ° C. At the same time, you can start airing roses, for 10-15 minutes a day, lifting the lower shelter.
  • Depending on the weather, you can finally remove the shelter in the middle - the end of May. It needs to be done on a cloudy, but not rainy day. Roses should be opened when the night temperature is stably higher than -2 ° C.
  • After the final disclosure, it should be pruned and fertilized with organic fertilizers. Before fertilizing roses in the spring, you should saturate the rhizome with oxygen. To do this, you need to carefully dig the ground with pitchfork next to the rose bushes.

As is clear from all of the above, growing a climbing rose, even if adapted for a cold climate, will require special care. The reward for the trouble will be a real masterpiece of landscape floristry - a delightful plant, blooming in bloom all season.
