GTS - domestic all-terrain vehicle

The territory of Russia for the most part consist of difficult-to-reach areas. And to get over them on ordinary cars is simply impossible. So we have to acquire special equipment that can overcome any obstacles. A bright representative of this technology were caterpillar ATVs.

How it all began

The second World War showed the citizens of the country how important the technique is, capable of driving through any terrain. Therefore, after the war, designers and engineers began to develop all-terrain vehicles. Of course, we did not prepare for war. It was planned to use technology to develop the country's northern lands.

And the efforts brought success. Already in 1954 the first copies of the GTS were presented. The ATV had a cabin with a front seat, a section for the engine and a cargo platform. A model was produced at the Gorky Automobile Plant. In the same place, this model received the factory name GAZ-47. The basis for development was the production of military equipment. More precisely - tanks T-60 and T-7.

The model was named after the first letters of the words, which indicate the belonging of the machine - the caterpillar conveyor snowball.

All-terrain vehicle

Designers knowingly spent three years developing the project. The off-road vehicle, the characteristics of which made it unique at that time, cost such efforts. He had the best cross-country ability at the time. Even the tanks were stuck in a swamp or sands. The developers took into account these shortcomings. As a result, the all-terrain vehicle got wider caterpillars. Each of them was increased by thirty centimeters. This technique reduced the pressure of the equipment on the soil. GTS was able to overcome not only the swamp, but also snow drifts.

And water is not an obstacle for the GTS. The ATV is able to wade through the river in a small current. The depth should not exceed one hundred and twenty centimeters. True, the distance is limited to one and a half kilometers. Under such conditions a snow aerobot can overcome water obstacles without additional training. At the same time its speed is regulated by the work of the tracks. If the speed of the river is very high, the GAZ-47 lost stability because of the large area of the submarine side. There was a chance of heeling and flooding if the equipment was approaching the shore by the side. To get out on land the all-terrain vehicle could only in places with a gentle descent, not exceeding twenty degrees.

In addition, the GTS (cross-country vehicle) is able to overcome a slope of sixty percent, a ravine with a width of 1.3 meters, a wall with a height of sixty centimeters.

Application area

ATVs GTT, GTS were developed specifically for operation in severe climatic conditions. For this, the technique was performed with improved capacity and reliability. Snow aerobatics successfully worked in the Northern, Far Eastern, Siberian regions, Central Asia and even Antarctica. There they could be transported even by air using An-12 or Il-76 aircraft. The temperature at which it is possible to operate the machine is represented by a range from minus forty to plus fifty degrees.

GAZ-47 was successfully used in the military sphere. In addition, the all-terrain vehicle has been widely used in construction, geological and scientific research, in the construction and use of oil and gas pipelines, while conducting rescue operations. Another area of application is the transport of goods in trailers weighing up to two tons.

Features of the machine

GTS (cross-country vehicle) is distinguished by the fact that the power unit and transmission are located in the bow of the car. In addition, the drive is also front.

The body is all-metal. The main elements of it are a compartment for the engine, a cabin with two doors, a cargo area with awning. The heating system of the cabin is interesting. The heater is installed for heating. But his blades are bent in the opposite direction. Due to this, the air from the cockpit is not ejected. On the contrary, cold air is drawn into the radiator system. There it heats up and enters the cabin.

Specifications

Possessed GTS (cross-country vehicle) with the following dimensions: length 4.9 meters, width 2.4 meters and height two meters. At the same time, the road clearance was forty centimeters.

It was equipped with a six-cylinder four-cycle carburetor engine GAZ-61. He gave out eighty five liters capacity. The transmission had one rear and four forward speeds. To start the engine is installed electric starter, pneumatics and battery capacity of 24 volts.

Suspension bracket torsion. It is made in the form of five rollers, which allow to improve the performance characteristics of all-terrain vehicles. They are made of a mixture of rubber and mineral substances.

The GTS is capable of speeds of up to 35 kilometers per hour on hard soil, ten kilometers per hour in snow and four kilometers per hour in water. The fuel in the tank is enough for 400 kilometers of the way.
