God Saturn: The History of the Appearance of the Roman God of Fertility and Farming

God Saturn is one of the most majestic representatives of the Roman pantheon. Long since he was represented as the creator of everything on earth. For a long time it was Saturn that was considered the main god of the ancient Romans, until the god of war Jupiter took his place.

So, what do we know about this miracle worker? What myths and rituals are associated with it? And why even today his name is known to everyone in the world?

The Exile of Olympus

Initially, it was believed that the Roman god Saturn was the patron saint of farmers. That is why on the first sculptures it is depicted either with a garden knife, or with a grain sickle. Some scholars believe that the first Roman king became the prototype of this deity. However, they do not yet have sufficient evidence to support this theory.

More importantly, over the years, the god of Saturn began to be compared with Kronos. And the reason was the close contact of Roman civilization with Greek culture and religion. Therefore it is not surprising that soon a new myth about their deity was born among the people.

According to him, Saturn really was a great titanic god, Kronos. Thrown from the throne by his son Zeus (Jupiter), he was forced to go into exile. After leaving Greece, he wandered for a long time in the white light, until he came across an amazing village called Latsiya (Italy). Saturn liked the local lands so much that he decided to stay forever in these parts.

The Great Sage and Protector

Settling in Italy, the god Saturn endowed this country with his patronage. Thus, the Romans believe that it was he who taught the first farmers to cultivate fields and sow wheat. Because of this, farmers always offered him sacrifices, in order to propitiate and appease the great god. After all, this was the only way to expect a good harvest and protection against pests. In time, the god Saturn also became the patron of scientists and inventors. They believed that it was this great sage that helped them to rotate the wheel of progress.

It is also curious that Saturn was endowed with the abilities of the ancient Greek god Chronos. Perhaps the reason for this was the banal consonance of the names of Kronos and Chronos, or perhaps the Romans deliberately exalted their defender. Ultimately, the Roman people believed that the god Saturn led their country to the golden age. Therefore, every year at the end of December they held great festivities - Saturnalia. During this period, the Romans gave each other gifts and wished for happiness and prosperity.

Moreover, in one day of Saturnalia, slaves were given freedom and could command their masters. What is true, such joy lasted only one day, after which everything returned to normal.

The great honor that the god of the planet Saturn received

Most of the gods of ancient civilizations have irretrievably erased from the memory of mankind. And even those who live in myths, sooner or later will forget. However, the Roman gods expected a completely different fate - their names became an indestructible legend.

So, in honor of the great god one of the most beautiful planets in the Solar system was named. Belted with a magic belt, it will forever fix the name of the god Saturn in the consciousness of descendants. And, looking at the vast cosmic distance, they will always remember it.
