Ford Probe: specifications, photos and reviews

Ford Probe is a car that is a joint development of Mazda and Ford concerns, which is identical to the model called Mazda MX-6. They really have a similar design (because the "Mazda 626" was based on the "Ford") and the exterior in general. For the first time the light saw this car in 1988, and the release was completed in 1997.

Design

The car Ford Probe was presented to the public in 1979 - long before the launch. But then it was just an aerodynamic concept car. In general, there was much controversy about the design. The Mazda management approved the exterior of the car, but the specialists of Ford maintained that it was already obsolete. They wanted to make it more athletic and aggressive. Therefore, American designers transformed the windshield, the windows on the side doors removed the frames and made all the necessary changes. And let the leadership of Mazda was dissatisfied with the fact that American experts contributed to the common cause, they had to accept the design offer of Ford. As a result, the face was approved.

However, then there were disagreements as to where the model will be manufactured. Representatives of the company "Mazda" thought to build their plant in the US, but the "Ford" already had its own closed free foundry in Michigan. As a result, it was bought by the Japanese concern. The premises were converted into a warehouse, and a modern factory was erected nearby.

Features of the first release

Debut models Ford Probe turned out to be sporty and aggressive. In these cars successfully combined air conditioning system, as well as cruise control with an on-board computer and a full electropackage. As standard, there were disc brakes (on each wheel), ABS, turbocharged compressor. The LX and GL versions had a more rigid body, soft suspension, narrow rubber and automatic transmission. The LX version boasted adjustable seats and a steering column, electric mirrors and alloy wheels. But all models without exception had an electronic instrument panel.

After its release, the Ford Probe met with serious rivals such as the Nissan 200SX, Honda Prelude and Toyota Celica. Nevertheless, he had success.

Technical features

Now we need to tell what Ford Probe characteristics have. To begin with, I would like to note that the fully equipped model (known as GL) cost about 17,600 dollars at the time of 1988. A couple of years, we spent an easy restyling. Cosmetic improvements slightly transformed the body and added a new power unit. On versions LX from now on installed also 6-cylinder 12-valve V-shaped motor. Its volume was three liters. A bright feature was the electronic fuel injection.

This model was distinguished by an advanced ECC-IV motor control system. The power unit produced 140 horsepower. Interestingly, 80% (!) Of torque was generated at 1000 rpm - and this is an excellent indicator. Two years later, in 1992, the motor was finalized. He became a bit (5 lb.) more powerful.

The second generation

In the 90s, the developers of the Japanese-American concern began to think about what will be the second generation of the Ford Probe. Work was in full swing. It was planned by 1993 to present to the attention of the public a completely ready novelty. The same 626 Mazda was used as a platform . Now the developers of "Ford" engaged in design, and Japanese specialists began to improve the chassis and engine. As a result, the novelty increased by 5 centimeters in length and by 10 cm in width. The weight has decreased by as much as 60 kilograms.

The base version was equipped with a 4-cylinder 2-liter engine. It was a 16-valve, 115-strong, solid unit. But a much more powerful engine was installed under the hood of the "charged" version of the GT. It was equipped with a 24-valve 2.5-liter V-engine, producing 164 horsepower.

Unfortunately, when the new "Mustang" came out in 1994, the Ford Probe, the photo of which was provided above, ceased to be so popular. Manufacturers even wanted to stop producing it. But until 1997 it still existed. And in March of that year, "Ford" gave an official announcement that the model will cease to be published.

Latest issue

But still the right to "last word" car earned. About the car the Ford Probe reviews were very good and positive. Apparently, the manufacturers decided that it is not necessary to turn off production so quickly. Therefore, the developers have planned to update the cars that were previously released. They called it the third generation. It was built on the platforms of Mercury Mystique and Ford Contour. In 1998, Ford introduced the new Probe as a restyled car, known as the Mercury Cougar.

Features of cars

The first versions of the Ford Probe featured 3-spoke steering wheels, spectacular side moldings and bumpers, as well as aluminum wheel disks (cobweb-shaped - as an option). People who became owners of this model were satisfied with the car, but said that it lacks comfort and modernity. Because in 1990, the world came out with updated versions, in the development of which all the wishes of motorists were taken into account. The models received ABS, automatic transmission, automatic shoulder harnesses, and the manual mode switch of the gearbox was replaced with a mode change button. More cars were equipped with illumination (mirrors and door lock buttons), CD-player, rear belts. As an option, a leather interior was available.

In 1992, no pronounced changes were observed. In 1993, too. Only a pillow was added as a basic equipment, and the option included heating of the side mirrors, opening of the doors without a key, and an anti-theft system. In 1994, a new automatic transmission for 2-liter engines and an air conditioning system. In 1995, the Ford Probe specifications became better - there was a heater compartment, 16-inch chrome wheels and a new finish.

In general, this "Ford" - a great car for people who like the original sports style, multi-purpose lounge and comfortable driving. Negative reviews of him a little, and even then - here, rather, the question of taste. By the way, and now it can be purchased. The prices are rather modest - from 80 thousand rubles and up to 200-250 in the second-hand condition. The cost will vary depending on the year of manufacture and equipment. And, of course, from the state. It is very important to pay attention when buying.
