Flag of Cuba: "The Lonely Star" of Socialism in the Camp of Democrats

For many countries, Cuba is a striking example of freedom and independence. This state is located on the island of the same name in the Caribbean Sea. The unofficial name of the republic is the Island of Freedom.

Independent Socialist Country of the Caribbean Sea

Many states of the world have a feeling of envy for this country: after all, only one of the democratic whales of North, South and Central America managed to establish its political system. At present, Cuba is the only republic of the Western Hemisphere, where socialism rules. In the country's parliament, the largest number of seats are occupied by representatives of the strongest and most numerous Communist Party.

All over the world, the flag of Cuba often adorns the offices and rooms of people who are fans of the ideas of Fidel Castro and Ernesto Che Guevara. It was these people who went on a desperate step and decided to lead the liberation movement in the territory of their country, captured by the Spaniards and Americans. Thanks to the tangible support of the people and the proper distribution of priorities and forces, at the beginning of the 20th century, the flag of Cuba was first raised in the sky over the same island of the Caribbean Sea. The Republic became an independent and free state.

What is depicted on the banner of the country?

The modern flag of Cuba is a rectangular canvas, on which the main part is occupied by horizontal strips. There are five in total. Equal in width, they are painted in two colors: white (2 bands) and blue (3 bands). The left side of the banner is an equilateral triangle, which has a red color. The base of the figure along the length is equal to the side of the flag. In the middle of the triangle is a five-pointed star of white color. Practically in all cases (above state buildings, over embassies, during international summits, etc.) a banner is used, the proportions of sides of which are 7:10.

History of occurrence

As already mentioned above, for a long time the territory of modern Cuba could not be divided between Americans and Spaniards. Two world powers did not want to give each other a tidbit. Located at the intersection of trade routes, Cuba was a "key" to the New World. At the end of the XIX century, the island was owned by the Spaniards. In 1868, the people of the country took the path of revolution. The national liberation war was aimed at making the country independent and free from any colonists. Named then (in 1884) Miguel Tolon, who holds the post of editor of the newspaper Pravda, and came up with the flag of Cuba, pictures of which for a long time were only paper images.

What was its basis?

As the foundation for the creation of the national symbol of the country, the US flag was used , which is a reflection of independence and indicates the path of freedom of citizens. The flag of Cuba first rose above the island in 1850. This event was preceded by the unsuccessful attempt of General Lopez to liberate the northern coast of the island from the colonists. It was then that the name of the banner - "The Lonely Star" was first sounded.

In 1902, the flag of Cuba, whose photo is presented in the article, was proclaimed the official and sole banner of this independent socialist state.

The meaning of the banner and its elements

Three blue horizontal stripes on the flag of the country symbolize three parts of the state, to which it was divided by the Spaniards. White lines represent the desire of these territories to unite. The triangle depicted on the pennant was borrowed from the Masonic movement. It symbolizes freedom, brotherhood and equality. The red color of this figure is the blood spilled by the Cubans in the process of gaining independence. The star, which was called the "Lonely Star", is intended to illuminate the people's way to freedom and a brighter future. A similar symbol is found on the flag of the American state of Texas.
