Drills for wood - which one to choose?

The drill is the universal tool, without which none, even the simplest repair, can do. It should be remembered that for each material there is a certain kind of drill. The main thing is to remember that the cutting tool should be harder than what is to be processed. Depending on the material in which the hole is going to be drilled, there are drill bits for wood, for metal and for concrete. There are also drills on glass, as well as tiles. Naturally, in each specific case the appropriate instrument is used. Regardless of the purpose, each drill has: shank, working and cutting parts, chip removal elements.

What are the drills on wood

Wood is a fibrous material, and therefore, in order to pierce the hole in it, special drillings for wood having a special shape are needed. There are a lot of them, but most often they use the following:

  • Spiral. It is designed for drilling holes, usually from 3 to 52 mm. At the end of such a drill is a special point, designed for ease of use.
  • A feather. Used for drilling not very thick boards, as well as fiberboard and chipboard. Such a drill does not have a chip removal, and therefore it is not very convenient to make deep holes with it. In order not to buy the whole set, it is possible to purchase a perforated drill in wood (adjustable). The diameter of such a drill can vary from 15 to 76 mm.
  • The Forstner drill. Used to drill blind holes. It allows you to make a hole from the bottom flat, smooth and smooth. Usually has a diameter of 10 to 50 mm.
  • Drill bit for wood. It is used to drill large holes that a conventional drill can not handle. Outwardly it is a ring with teeth, in the middle of which there is a centering drill. Several pieces are sold usually in a set with a diameter of 19 to 127 mm. The depth of drilling by the crown is limited, as a rule, it is 22 mm. There are models with drilling depths up to 64 mm. Such a drill can also make holes in plastic or plasterboard.
  • Drill-cutter. Used for holes of complex shape, for example, to create curvatures. The cutting part of the drill-cutter is in the center, and therefore it is necessary first to drill, and then to go to the side.

Recommendations for choosing a drill

Choosing any tool, not only drills on wood, the first thing you need to pay attention to is the appearance. In no case should a qualitative product have visible external defects (chips, scratches, dents). Cutting edges should be uniformly colored and be well sharpened along the entire length.

The next thing you need to pay attention to is the color of the drill. It is this feature that will help determine which finishing process it was exposed to. So, what can the color of the drill tell us?

  • Gray-steel. Processing was not performed.
  • The black. To increase the strength, the drill was subjected to a superheated steam treatment.
  • Golden. This means that the drill has undergone special treatment to relieve the internal stresses of the material.
  • Bright gold. Means that the surface of this tool is covered with a layer of titanium nitride, which should make it stronger and extend the life.

When choosing a drill, it is necessary to pay special attention to the manufacturer. It is better to buy products from well-known companies. This will help to get not only a quality product, but also avoid unnecessary waste of money.
