Double brick - unreasonable waste or saving

The market for building materials is very diverse, manufacturers constantly offer buyers new technologies for building and finishing buildings, but there are materials that have not lost their relevance and relevance for centuries. Among them - a brick. There are a lot of types of brick, it can differ in size, composition, purpose. In today's article, we will try to understand what a double brick is, and also what are its advantages and disadvantages in comparison with other species.

What is a double brick

By the method of application bricks are divided into ordinary and facing. The second option assumes that the stones differ in attractive appearance, they overlay the outer part of the walls to add to the house of aesthetics. The ordinary brick is the basic building material for erection of bearing walls and interior partitions. There are many kinds of it. Traditional is the standard single brick with dimensions of 65 * 120 * 250 mm (in * w * d). However, the main drawback of this stone is that building a house from it is a very laborious process. Reduce the time that will be required for construction, you can, if you use an increased stone, that is, a double brick, the dimensions of this building material - 138 * 120 * 250 mm.

As can be seen from the parameters, the main difference of this stone is the height. And if the ordinary single brick can be full-bodied and hollow, then the double-brick producers make predominantly hollow, or, as it is also called, crevice. That is, in the middle of the stone are visible voids, which constitute a different percentage value, calculated from the total area of the brick.

What is the increased brick

As it was already written above, the double brick is not distinguished by a particularly large assortment. The main parameter that allows the buyer to make a choice is the composition of the material. Ceramic brick - this is a proven classic for centuries. Red stone is used everywhere, the buildings are durable, beautiful, in addition, they have excellent noise and heat insulation. In a brick house it is easy to breathe in the summer, and in winter it is warm and cozy in it. Double ceramic brick, like a standard stone, is made of clay, it is this material that provides special physical properties and appearance of this building material.

Manufacturers offer builders not only a simple rectangular stone, they also create bricks with grooves. This so-called porous version, thanks to a special form of masonry from such a material is greatly simplified, and significantly decreases the consumption of cement mortar.

Double silicate brick in size is the same as ceramic, it is only hollow, because of its considerable weight. It is made of sand and lime. It should be taken into account that it is not suitable for the construction of any objects, so, it is necessary to avoid silicate brick for erection of furnaces, basement premises, and also those buildings that will be subject to high humidity.

Pros and cons of increased building materials

Perhaps the only drawback in which you can blame a double brick is the price. Yes, indeed, the cost of one enlarged stone is an order of magnitude higher than that of a regular ordinary brick, and the higher it is for a porous one. But with more detailed calculation it turns out that the aggregate consumption of funds for construction of the enlarged brick is not so much higher than the estimate calculated for the construction of ordinary single stone. The main reason, justifying this statement, - double bricks will need to be purchased an order of magnitude less in quantitative terms. Other advantages include the following:

  • Savings on construction of the foundation. The enlarged brick is hollow, and its mass is lower than that of a solid one, so there is no need to build the most powerful base for a building.

  • The time spent on laying walls is reduced 4-5 times.

  • Another plus - you need less solution, and this is savings on cement, sand, their delivery and subsidiary workers.

Masonry of double bricks

What stands out in the double brick is the size, but for the construction process this parameter has no special role. The technology of laying such a brick is not fundamentally different from any other. In this case, rather than the size of the stone, its internal content is more important. So, because of the presence of voids in the brick, it is necessary to mix a thicker mortar solution, if the cement mixture turns out to be very liquid, it will spread along the slits. This will significantly raise the consumption of the solution per square meter and will cause the wall to keep heat worse. Air layers in the brick are created not just for the purpose of saving raw materials, they allow air to circulate freely inside the wall, which ensures its heat and noise insulation.
