Determinant tomato varieties - basic characteristics

Each summer resident, planting tomatoes in his own beds, dreams of growing a good harvest. In order to get it, you should choose the right seed material. Depending on the nature of branching and growth, indeterminate and determinant varieties of tomatoes are distinguished .

Product specifications: Indeterminate varieties of tomatoes are characterized by unlimited growth, constant flowering and renewal of growth, uniformity of maturation and easy formation of plants in a single stem.

Such varieties are good for planting in sheltered ground. The indeterminate varieties include: Bull Rose Heart, Japanese Crab, Stolypin, Red Arrow, Bon Appetite, Sweet Tooth, Winter Cherry and others.

Determinant varieties of tomatoes are characterized by short stature, precocity. They are compact, do not generate a large number of stepchildren. Features of such plants:

- low growth of the bush;

- after the formation of 2-4 bunches, the growth of the main stem and stepsons ceases;

- the formation of the first flower brush over the sixth or seventh sheet;

- all formed shoots result in inflorescence and fetal formation.

Determinant tomatoes are suitable for planting in open ground. The determinants include: Balcony miracle, Button, Crimson giant, Pyshka, Cranberry in sugar, Stolypin and others.

The determinant species is divided into the following varieties:

- Superdeterminant varieties of tomatoes - completion of growth after the formation of 2-4 inflorescences located above the 7-8 leaf of the main stem. Characterized by a weak growth of stepchildren, precocity and uniform ripening of the crop. To such belong many early and early varieties;

- determinant varieties of tomatoes - cessation of growth after 4-6 ovaries, the first ovary is formed over the 8-9 leaf, the more active growth of the stepsons and the long fruiting time, the uniform ripening of the crop;

- semi-determinant varieties - characterized by later ripeness, the first ovary is formed over the 9-12 leaf of the main stem and over 3-5 - on the lateral shoots. The crop is uniform throughout the vegetative period, after the formation of 6-12 brushes the growth stops.

Planting: The seedlings are planted in holes corresponding to the size of the roots of the seedlings. In the prepared holes you need to add organic fertilizer, carefully moisten the soil and carefully place the seedlings there, sealing the earth around them. When transplanting, you should be very careful not to damage the root system of the plant.

The determinant varieties of tomatoes are planted in a row, with a distance of 50 cm. The width between rows is 60-70 cm. Indeterminate varieties are planted with an interval of 50-60 cm and a width between rows of 80-90 cm.

Planting time: Plant tomatoes at a time when there is no threat of frost, the optimal time for this is the end of June. Tomatoes of early varieties are best planted earlier, in late May. When frost threatens, planted plants should be covered with a film. Early varieties of tomatoes have a higher survival rate, are less prone to disease and begin to bear fruit at the end of July.

Care: Planted tomatoes require the following maintenance actions:

- control of weeds during the entire period of growth and maturation;

- hilling several times per season;

- pasynkovanie;

- pinching the main stem to stimulate branching;

- fertilization with the help of organic and mineral solutions - is made before hilling;

- watering - made as required;

- control of pests and diseases (1% solution of Bordeaux is used against phytophthors).

How to choose seeds: The best seeds are those that remain from the last season from their own harvest. If you buy seeds at retail outlets, you need to carefully examine the packaging. On each package should be written instruction on the characteristics of growth of the proposed variety. If it is not, then in order to avoid unnecessary difficulties when growing from such a purchase it is better to refuse.
