Comparative and excellent degree of adjectives and adverbs

Each of the existing parts of speech has its own characteristics. All of them are divided into groups by value, so their features are completely different. Some parts of speech help to compare one object or quality with another. Thanks to this, categories such as a comparative and excellent degree have appeared. What they are, we will take a closer look in our article.

Degrees of comparison

Every schoolboy knows that the adjective and adverb name differ from other speech groups in that they can form different degrees of comparison. They call this form of the word, which changes due to the comparison of one quality with another.

As a rule, there are three subgroups:

  • Positive degree. In this form, the word stands when it is not compared to any other. For example: beautiful (in itself), it is cold (without comparison with what was before, or will be later). It is also called the initial degree, and in linguistics it is scientifically defined as a positive.
  • Comparative. The word in this form is used in the case when one quality of an object or of a phenomenon relates to another. For example: large - more (than the first), sad - sadder (than it was before).
  • An excellent degree. It is used if you want to express the highest quality score among the rest, like him. For example: light - light (most), fun - more fun.

Adjective

From the whole variety of parts of speech, the role of forming degrees is assigned only to adjectives and adverbs. To explain this is not difficult: each of them denotes the quality of the object and its state. And they are not difficult to compare with each other.

A comparative degree (adjective) is formed in two different ways:

  • Plain. The suffix -ee or -y is added to the basis of the word: white - whiter (whiter), colorful - more colorful (more colorful).
  • Complicated. To a positive degree we substitute the words "more" and "less": warmer - more (less) warm, terrible - more (less) terrible.

In difficult cases, it is not possible to form a simple comparative degree. Then use only complex. To such examples we will refer the word "heavy".

An excellent degree has two methods of education:

  • Plain. To the basis (adjective) suffixes -ish or -aish are added: dear - dear.
  • Complicated. It is formed with the help of the auxiliary words "most", "all": the kindest, the kindest of all.

Sometimes for amplification add a prefix-we: the best is the best.

Adverb

This particular part of speech practically does not change, it does not have endings and a system of declensions. But it has a different ability. Just like the adjective, the adverb has a form of superlative and comparative.

The latter is formed with the help of:

  • Add suffix -ee (simple way): slower-slower, cleaner-cleaner.
  • Words-assistants "more" and "less": bright - more (less) bright, fashionable - more (less) fashionable.

An adverb in an excellent degree is rarely formed with the help of suffixes -aisha, -hehe: more submissively, strictly. We often find such forms in the literature of past centuries.

As a rule, the words "all" (fastest), "maximum" (as short as possible) are more often used.

To strengthen the use of the prefix-the one: the most.

The result

We daily compare one object, quality or phenomenon with another. In oral speech, we do not even think about the ways that help us in this. Now we know how to write a comparative and excellent degree. Do not forget that this feature is only the names of adjectives and adverbs. No matter how you do this - using suffixes or using special words, do not forget that not all forms have existence. In this case, it is worth checking them in the dictionary.
