Coat of arms of the Murmansk region: description and symbols

The coat of arms of the Murmansk region, like the symbols of other subjects, reflects the historical development of the territory and its role for the state.

Description

The coat of arms of the Murmansk region is a classic French shield, divided into two parts by a horizontal line. In the upper field on a blue background shows a golden aurora borealis. The center of the composition of the lower part is the golden anchor, behind which there are crossed silver swords and a pickaxe. The background is painted red.

Symbolism

The coat of arms of the Murmansk region, the description of which would be incomplete without symbolic deciphering, was thoroughly considered, and each separate element carries its own meaning:

  • The northern lights emphasize that the region is beyond the Arctic Circle;
  • Anchor indicates that the main area of activity of the inhabitants of the region are navigation and fishing;
  • The pickax symbolizes a large number of minerals and a developed system for their extraction and processing;
  • The sword reminds of honor and courage.

In addition to individual elements, the choice of colors is also not random:

  • Blue (azure) - power and natural beauty;
  • Red (scarlet) - courage and valor;
  • Gold - luxury, wealth;
  • Silver - purity of thoughts and devotion to their country.

Coat of arms of Murmansk region: history of adoption

The region is quite young, and a new coat of arms was adopted in 2004. Before that, there were two projects. In 2002, the emblem represented itself as a French shield divided into three parts in an overturned-fork-shaped way. On the right side there is a golden anchor on the scarlet background. The left part is painted blue, it shows the silver head of the reindeer. Below, on a silver background, are two crossed diamond cuffs. The top of the composition is decorated with golden aurora borealis.

In 2003, the project was changed, and the coat of arms of the Murmansk region began to look much simpler. On the azure background there is a fortress tower, with a pick and an anchor on each side. All elements are made in silver. In the upper part there is a golden aurora borealis. Also the shield is crowned with a golden crown.

Flag

The flag of the region is a canvas, divided into two parts horizontally in a 1: 4 ratio. In the upper broad field on a blue background there is a northern light, the lower band is colored in a rich red color.
