Chamfer - what is it? Scope and purpose
In the technological, ergonomic, and more often for aesthetic purposes, a chamfer is used to process the edges of the products. Any person in his life has often heard this short word, often without knowing its meaning. So, chamfer - what is it and where it can be found? How important is this detail?
Chamfer - what is it?
First of all, it is the bevel of the edge of the material. Applied it for technological purposes in engineering and metalworking to improve the quality of the welded seam. In the same area, one can find a chamfer of a fixing hole, which serves to reduce the risk of injury by sharp edges. The same way of preparing holes can be seen in the production of furniture, only in this case it serves to fix the parts in vpota (when the hats of bolts and screws are not visible).
For aesthetic purposes, a chamfer is used when laying floors. Due to this method of processing the edges, the slits formed during temperature and humidity changes are not noticeable.
Mounting Holes
As already mentioned, the chamfer is used to process the fixing holes. It serves, first of all, to reduce the risk of injury to the sharp edges of the hole, but it is also used for fixing parts in the hinges. This processing differs only in the angle of the bevel of the material. If the angle is usually 45 degrees, then for the fixing in the hinges the recommended slope of the bevel at the hole and shaft is 10 degrees.
Welds
Experienced experts will say that when performing welds a chamfer is necessary. That this will not only ensure the high quality of the connection, but also greatly facilitate their work.
When joining two sheets of steel, the chamfer is used to bypass the restriction on the depth of weld seam. Structurally, this element can be made in two ways: with a straight and curved surface. In this case, the second method is often used, since such a depression has a larger volume.
Wooden floors
When working with an array of trees, the question may arise: "How to make a chamfer?" Especially since a woodworking machine does not quite fit this. First of all, the material is polished clean (it will be impossible to do this later). For chamfering use a manual milling machine with an edge cutter on the bearing. This allows to achieve the ideal quality of the treated surface even with a small curvature of the boards.
Laminate
Today, not everyone can afford the floors of a solid wood and a parquet board in view of the high labor costs and the loss of time for repair work. On the floors in apartments more often you can find a laminate. It not only simply and quickly spreads, but also has excellent operational and aesthetic qualities, in many respects not conceding to natural surfaces.
Currently, the market often buy a laminate, on the edge of which there is a facet. What is it and how does it influence the end result? First of all, the chamfered laminate looks more representative, completely repeating the appearance of the natural wood. Secondly, this insignificant nuance masks the changes in the gaps between the boards that appear during the exploitation of the floor.
Many consumers are still skeptical about such flooring. The argument is that the chamfer in the laminate is unacceptable, that this will allow dust and dirt to accumulate in the depressions and penetrate the seams. This is not so, because modern technologies for the production of materials make it possible to make the laminate waterproof and dirt-resistant on the whole surface. A high-quality lock will prevent the penetration of debris into the seams.
