At the foot of the hill, a little to the south, a railway is laid (a message from Nizhny Novgorod to Moscow). Here is the station Bogolyubovo. At the same time, an old highway from Moscow to Nizhny Novgorod passes through the railroad track.

History of the village

Bogolyubovo (Vladimir region) was first mentioned in the annals in 1158. The settlement for his residence was founded by Andrei Bogolyubsky. There is a legend according to which exactly in this place the prince was the appearance of the Virgin, who ordered to found a monastery and a city. In a relatively short period (from 1158 to 1165), large-scale construction was carried out on the right bank of the Nerl River. On the hill appeared a palace, a cathedral and various fortifications. Was built and the Church of the Intercession on the Nerl. It is interesting that all these structures are constructed of stone.

After a short time around the prince's palace was rebuilt the city, which was called Bogolyubov. Unfortunately, the heyday of this settlement was very short-lived. In decline the city began to come after the death of Andrew Bogolyubsky. In 1177, he was destroyed by the Ryazan prince Gleb, and in 1238 the troops of Batu razed to the ground all the city fortifications. Since then, Bogolyubovo (Vladimir region) has become a small village with an active monastery, which was founded on the site of the prince's palace. In this form the given settlement exists and now.

Church of the Intercession on the Nerl

The village of Bogolyubovo in the Vladimir region can not boast of a large number of attractions. But at the same time, more of what is, is on the UNESCO World Heritage List and is popular with many tourists.

One such structure is the Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin on the Nerl. It was built in 1165 according to the order of Prince Andrew Bogolyubsky. And the place for this most harmonious building, existing in the Russian architecture of religious direction, was chosen very successfully. There is a church on an elevation in the middle of the field, at the very confluence of the Nerli River in Klyazma. This place was chosen by Prince Andrew Bogolyubsky not by chance. The fact is that at that time the mouth of the Nerl served as a navigable gate, passing through which merchants entered the Vladimir region. The sight of visitors was opened with a surprising beauty: a white-stone church, towering above a picturesque green meadow. At present, the Nerl River has changed its course.

The architectural design of the temple is extremely simple. It is a single-headed four-pillar three-pedestal cross-domed structure.
Many experts note that the Church of the Intercession on the Nerl has a common harmony, as well as the refinement of proportions. This creates an illusion of its weightlessness. The temple seems to float in the air. A particularly striking picture is observed in the spring. The temple during this period is similar to a burning candle that is facing the sky.

The feeling of flight and mobility of the church is attached to the walls, which are slightly inclined inwards, as well as vertical lines created by high narrow windows and elongated columns of the arcade belt. Thanks to these techniques, the building visually increases. Decoration of church walls is carved reliefs. The central composition of the three facades of the temple is King David, seated on the throne. In his left hand he holds a psalter, and the right one produces a two-fingered blessing. In the design of the walls there are also images of lions, birds and women's masks. In 1992, the Church of the Intercession on the Nerl was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The Holy Bogolyubsky Monastery

This structure was founded in the late 12th century. However, to this day only the buildings erected in the 18th and 19th centuries have reached. In the village of Bogolyubovo (Vladimir region) the monastery was built in pseudo-Russian style.

The landmarks of this monument of architecture are the Stair Tower with its adjoining gallery. These buildings are what's left of the ruined palace of Andrei Bogolyubsky. Now they are part of the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin, built in the 18th century. Fragments of the ruined palace are easily recognized by unique stone ornaments, similar to those found in the Cathedral of St. Demetrius in Vladimir, as well as in the Church of the Intercession on the Nerl. In the monastery is the Cathedral of the Bogolyubsky Icon of the Mother of God, which was erected in 1855-1865. However, the most notable construction is the gate church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, pleasing with its beauty since 1841.
