This name was received long before the appearance of a direct competitor, in practice, from the moment of birth. And if the first versions of the aircraft were called - 737-800, after the appearance of the 320 "Airbus" - this aircraft received a few processed parts, which resulted in increased range and the opportunity to take 12 passengers more than in previous models.

Who used to be?

Today it is believed that the "Boeing 738" was to become the successor to 737-400, which got better from him. BUT! The development of 738 (then 737-800) started before 400, and on the first flight he went two years earlier than the 400 model, which was very unusual at that time. The customers of the first aircraft were Germans, and in 1996 the first aircraft flew to their hangars. And certification in America (in the homeland of "Boeing" -2) was received only in 1998. It is not worth mentioning that the comparison of 737-400 with analog filling and 800 with digital stuff would not be in favor of 400. The digital plane from Boeing appeared only after it appeared on the market 320.
