Blood from the mouth: causes, treatment, emergency care

There are many health and life-threatening situations with which a person simply has to be acquainted. One of them is blood from the mouth. Why this problem can arise and how to deal with it - this will be discussed further.

What it is?

Initially, you need to understand what bleeding is. So, this is the release of blood from the blood vessels as a result of a violation of their integrity. Bleeding can be of two main types:

  • Traumatic , that is, those that arise as a result of mechanical damage to body tissues due to external factors (impact, cut).
  • Non-traumatic . Occur as a consequence of various diseases or pathological conditions (for example, bleeding can cause tumors or chronic diseases).

Also it should be noted that in the adult body contains about 5 liters of blood. In this case, the loss of two liters is considered deadly.

Bleeding from the mouth: Species

If a person has bleeding from the mouth, there may be several reasons for this. And you can divide them into three large groups:

  1. Blood from the oral cavity.
  2. Blood from the respiratory tract.
  3. Blood from internal organs.

In all these cases, the blood can go out through the mouth or in a pure form, or together with vomit or cough masses.

Blood formation in the oral cavity

If the blood has gone from the mouth, the causes may be hiding in the damage to the blood vessels. The intensity in this case depends on what exactly is injured: the vein, the capillary or the artery. If the bleeding is very massive, the fluid may enter the respiratory tract. And this, in turn, often leads to a stopping of breathing or the emergence of a shock state. Injure in this case can the tongue, palate, cheeks, gum. Blood from the mouth can go after removal of the tooth, cut tissue, the presence of malignant or benign tumors. But with all this, the biggest problem is the problems with blood coagulability. In this case there is a risk of massive blood loss, which is fraught with serious problems.

How to help with such bleeding

Initially, it should be noted that in such cases it is best to immediately seek medical help. After all, even if the problem seems to be simple, it can be very serious as a result. Especially if there are the above problems with the coagulability of the blood. It is also important to provide timely assistance to a person with bleeding.

  1. The patient should be seated or put on his side, after cleaning the oral cavity of any liquid, and also removing blood clots.
  2. Further on the affected area in the mouth, you must apply a cotton swab. You can moisten it in hydrogen peroxide 3%.
  3. If the blood does not stop for 30-40 minutes or more, the patient must be taken to hospital for observation.

In case there are tumors in the mouth or the blood coagulation processes are violated in the patient, the person should be immediately delivered to the clinic.

Hemoptysis

Because of what other causes can blood appear from the mouth? Sometimes this occurs as a result of pulmonary hemorrhage. In this case, the blood goes along with the cough masses. It can both completely color the sputum, and stand out as veins of scarlet color. Why does blood bleed from the mouth when coughing? The causes may be hidden in such diseases as tuberculosis, pneumonia, cyst, connective tissue problems, various infectious diseases, as well as lung and thorax injuries as a whole.

Help with pulmonary hemorrhage

In this case, you need to immediately go to the doctor. Previously, the patient should be seated and give him cold water. It must be drunk with small sips. It is also good to swallow small pieces of ice. If the patient has a strong cough, you should also give an antitussive drug. Well, if it contains codeine.

Blood vomiting

And the last group of cases, when blood can be released from the mouth, is vomiting with an admixture of blood. This fluid can enter the vomit and exit this way. Most often this is due to problems with the gastrointestinal tract. The cause may be an ulcer, colitis, gastritis, dysentery, cancer and other problems. In this case, it is worth remembering: if the emetic masses have a bright red or scarlet tinge, then the disease began acutely and develops rapidly. If the emetic mass has a dark brown color, it means that the bleeding is not strong, and the liquid has stayed in the stomach for a while and was susceptible to the action of gastric juice.

First aid for bloody vomiting

The patient, along with the vomit, bleeds from the mouth? Why this happens is understandable. But how can a person help? So, he immediately needs to be taken to the hospital. Necessarily on stretchers. The patient should lie on his back, his head - be below the body level, and on the stomach should put a cold water bottle or pieces of ice wrapped in a towel. Cold water should also be drunk in small sips, or you can ingest small pieces of ice. It is important to ensure that the emetic masses of the patient do not get into his respiratory tract. Therefore, the patient's head should be turned to the side.
