Adolescents spend an average of 9 hours a day on TV and the Internet

In the process of education, parents are hopelessly losing to the media, which has a much greater influence on the formation of the spiritual world of the younger generation than they are. This conclusion can be reached by examining the report of James Steyer, the founder and CEO of the organization studying the use of media by young people called Media Sense. In the first place, of course, the TV.

Multitasking of youthful perception

As everyone knows, in the day only 24 hours. Of them, a normal person spends a third on a healthy dream. From the remaining time, approximately nine hours, adolescents spend on the consumption of information through electronic means available to them. The largest share in this stream is occupied by music and television, despite the fact that a lot of information is submitted in text form. The problem is not so much this fact in itself, as multitasking of perception. In other words, children often do homework, while listening to music programs or watching movies, and sometimes even combining all three classes. At the same time, most of them feel comfortable enough. They themselves find it difficult to assess the degree of interference in obtaining knowledge and the skills necessary in life, but an objective study of the consequences of such multitasking indicates that the ability to concentrate attention on one thing in young people catastrophically falls.

What young people are looking for in the media

Experts from Media Sense conducted a survey of 2658 young people between 6 February and 9 March this year. The results obtained allow an error of about 2 percent. Two thirds of adolescents admitted to listening to music every day, 58% said the same about watching television.

45% reported that social networks are used daily for communication, of which only 36% consider it really too excessive. 72% of respondents noticed that they really enjoy the music.

The study also revealed:

- The TV is a favorite entertainment for ten-year-olds, 62 percent of respondents between the ages of 8 and 12 said they watch it every day.

- Exactly half of the time they watch the video, including TV shows during the hours of their live broadcast. The remaining hours of adolescents spend on DVDs or online channels. This allows you to more freely choose the time in which you can watch interesting programs and movies. This, of course, is the convenience that is available thanks to modern technology.

- Boys are much more likely than computer girls to play computer games. The boys spend an average of 56 minutes a day, while their friends devote only seven minutes to them. But girls spend more time in social networks or reading.

Fathers and Sons

- Half of adolescents admitted: they manage to watch TV and look to the Internet "often" or "sometimes" while doing homework.

- Three quarters noted: at the time when they are doing lessons, music is heard in the room.

- Half of the teenagers say: listening to music helps them learn, while only 6 percent believe that it still hinders them from concentrating.

In the end, almost two-thirds of schoolchildren today hold the view that watching TV programs or text files during home studies does not in any way affect their ability to learn, despite the fact that there are objective reasons to evaluate the situation to the exact opposite.

It is interesting to the parents' reactions to the emerging situation. The survey showed that they are more interested in the content of the information consumed than the amount of time spent on it. In a sense, perhaps, a lot of very busy dads and moms like this situation.
