Plot

The film takes place in the village. Maria is an orphan. Her grew up a grandmother. From the seventh grade Masha and Volodya love each other. And when a young man is drafted into the army, he makes a proposal to the girl. Volodya and Masha want to get married before parting, but it's not possible to register a marriage so quickly. The young man is sent to the emergency service. Mary is waiting for him.

But Volodya turns out to be a man who is windy, irresponsible. After the army he returns with his young wife. A grand scandal is raging, after which Masha tries to commit suicide. From this step she is kept by her grandmother - a strict woman, determined.

Mary makes a proposal to Alex - a widower who lives next door. The girl agrees to get married only in order to spite her former groom. And also because she was tired of the pity her fellow villagers felt for her. The words of the grandmother "You will live with the unskilled - you will not see the light of white" do not stop Maria from this reckless step.

Alex is not a romantic. Offering Maria's hand and heart, he leads strange arguments. Namely: he talks about his savings on a savings book and plans to buy "Zhiguli". Masha likes this approach. However, she had already made a decision. The wedding of Mary and Alexei is not going as it should in Russian villages. That is, without alcohol, dancing and street parties.

The next morning after the wedding night Mary understands that she made a mistake. Life becomes unbearable for her. The only thing that keeps Maria in her husband's house is the affection of Lucy, the adoptive daughter. While the young wife languishes in the house of her unloved husband, Tamara, a saleswoman from a local store and Alexei's former lover, suffers from unrequited love for him.

Time passes. Maria decides to go to study in the city. But Alex, of course, does not support his wife in these plans. And soon sends her to the city for work. There, Maria meets her former bridegroom and after a brief conversation understands that to him she does not have any more feelings. After this meeting, Maria enters the technical school and leaves her husband. And only after a few months he realizes that Alexei loves her for real, and with him she is like a stone wall.
