His invention was patented in 1954, and in 1966 on the basis of the 2nd city hospital of the city of Kurgan a laboratory was created to study the problems of transosseous osteosynthesis. In 68, Ilizarov received his doctorate. Thanks to the achievements of the laboratory in accelerating the regeneration of bone tissue, the Kurgan Scientific Research Institute of Experimental Orthopedics and Traumatology was established in 71 year.

The Ilizarov method

A special feature of the method is the use of a unique apparatus in the form of two or more steel rings connected by rods.
