Abstract: "Chekhov's Black Monk" by chapters

In 1893 the work of A.P. Chekhov, whose idea he saw in a dream. Genius and megalomania are the main issues that concern the author. We offer a brief summary of Chekhov's story "The Black Monk."

Chapter 1

Magister Andrei Vasilievich Kovrigin, the doctor advised me to go to the village in spring and summer to calm my nerves. At the same time, a letter came from a daughter of an old acquaintance and a tutor from Borisovka, who invited her to visit. Having visited his native Kovrinka, the hero went to his tutor, the well-known gardener Pesotsky. So begins his work "Black Monk" Chekhov. The summary does not include a detailed description of the house and garden of Yegor Semyonich. We only note that Pesotsky devoted his entire life to breeding and plant care. The result was a magnificent garden, where workers worked from morning till evening. Yes, and the owner himself gave him all his time, rarely daring even for a short departure from the estate. A great help to his father in his business was provided by Tatiana, an unmarried woman.

The first night Kovrigin, together with the girl, spent in the garden: they expected frost and burned fires there. They talked about the past life, about the future. And Kovrigin suddenly thought that over the summer he might fall in love with Tatyana, whom he still knew as a girl.

Chapter 2

In the village the hero slept little and did not stop working. One evening he heard a serenade about a girl with a sick imagination - it was played by the guests of Pesotsky. When the music was quiet, Kovrigin went out with Tatyana to the balcony. He told her a legend once heard, the hero of which was, as AP notes. Chekhov, a black monk. The summary of it is as follows. A thousand years ago a monk-ghost in black walked around the earth. He was seen in many places. Then he went out of the atmosphere and went to wander the universe. However, one of these days the ghost should appear again on the Earth.

After the conversation, Kovrigin went alone to the field alone. And suddenly a tall, moving pole appeared in front of him. Soon the hero clearly saw the shape - it was a black monk. Chekhov - the summary of the legend coincided with what the hero saw - he paid attention to the gray head, black eyebrows, bare feet of the mirage. The agitated master returned home and spent the evening in a sublime state.

Chapter 3

After the departure of guests between Andrei Vasilievich and Pesotsky, a conversation took place. Here is its brief content. A black monk - Chekhov, he also worried very much - made up all of Kovrigin's thoughts. However, the owner talked about the future. The fact that the garden after his death will not last a month. That the old man is afraid of the daughter's marriage - a stranger will easily surrender the trees for rent - and all is lost. And then he admitted that the only man for whom he could easily give Tanya - it's him, Andrei Vasilyevich. Finishing the conversation, Pesotsky expressed hope: maybe everything else will go well?

Chapter 4

One day, Tanya and Yegor Semyonovich fell out a lot. They did not talk all day, and Kovrigin took on the role of peacekeeper. He gently persuaded the girl that both had flared up and needed to be discussed. At these moments, Andrei Vasilyevich came to the idea: Tatiana likes him, and Pesotsky - the only people he knows in this world. Soon Yegor Semyonovich and Tanya peacefully talked in the garden, and Kovrigin went to the park.

Chapter 5

Evening shadows reminded the hero of the legend. Immediately from behind the tree appeared a familiar person. It was - then we offer a description of the conversation and its brief content - a black monk. Chekhov, as a physician, worried about the state of a person with disturbed psyche. The conversation began with the recognition that the monk is a ghost, the result of an excited imagination. Kovrigin noted the rather expressive face of the interlocutor and the fact that he looks at Andrei Vasilyevich with delight. The monk's answer was simple. A master is a genius, and this proves his ability to see ghosts. Kovrigin thought that the monk was reading his thoughts, and he offered to talk about eternal truth. However, the vision began to dissolve in the air, until it completely disappeared. This was a new meeting of the hero with a mysterious ghost and its brief content.

"Black Monk" Chekhov continues the description of the conversation between Andrei Vasilyevich and Tatyana. They met when Kovrigin returned home. Happy and with shining eyes from what he had experienced, he confessed to Tanya in love and offered to become his wife.

Chapter 6

In the house of Pesotsky there was a joyful and disturbing atmosphere: they were preparing for the wedding, and then the fruit was ripe. Kovrigin tried not to notice the commotion that had begun. He worked hard, inspiring his relationship with Tanya and meeting with the monk. The latter appeared to him now two or three times a week, and Andrei Vasilyevich finally became convinced of his chosenness and exclusiveness.

And after the Assumption fast the wedding took place, after which the young people left for the city.

Chapter 7

One winter night Kovrigin talked with a black monk, laughing and gesticulating. Behind this occupation and found him accidentally awakened Tanya. My wife noted the long-noted strangeness of Andryusha: he speaks to himself, hardly sleeps, smiles oddly. And at that moment Kovrigin realized how dangerous his situation was. "I went crazy," he confessed to Tanya and Pesotsky, who was with them. And in the morning he was taken to the doctor and began to be treated.

Chapter 8

By the summer the nerves of the hero had recovered, and he no longer saw the black monk. Once in the village, Kovrigin once went to the field where their first meeting took place. For a year, Andrei Vasilievich changed: the gait became sluggish, the face turned pale and filled with drugs and milk. Now he was annoyed. And having returned home, the man accused his father-in-law and his wife that they ruined his life. Before the hero pursued megalomania, but he was cheerful and happy. Now it's become mediocre, but it's no easier for anyone.

In the end, the relationship between Kovrigin and Tanya completely soured. As she did not ask him to be more kind to his father, nothing changed. Instead of the former happiness, dislike and mutual reproaches arose.

Chapter 9

Kovrigin was given his chair, but neither in December, nor in January did the lecture take place. Andrei Vasilyevich was seriously ill. Now he lived with a woman who followed him like a child. Hoping to improve Kovrigin's health, they went to Yalta. In Sevastopol, where they stopped for the night, the hero decided to print out a letter from Tanya, which he received before leaving. Now he believed that he had married her in vain, and therefore was happy to part. He suddenly remembered how ugly he had acted when he told me that Yegor Semyonitch had asked him to marry Tanya. Finally, Kovrigin read the letter. The father has died, the garden is dying, and Tanya's heart is burning with pain and hatred - here is its brief content.

"Black Monk" Chekhov ends with a story about the death of the hero. After reading the letter, he tore it into shreds and experienced anxiety, similar to fear. It seemed to him that the inviolable power that had brought so much misery to him and his family for two years now would come in again at the door. Trying to work failed. Andrei Vasilyevich went to the balcony and saw an approaching post. Soon the monk stood before him and asked why Kovrigin did not believe in his exceptionality. And the hero suddenly felt the former happiness again and called everyone Tanya, a magnificent garden, a beautiful old life. In the morning, Kovrigin "was already dead, and his face was frozen blissful smile" - finishes the work "Black Monk" Chekhov (a summary of the chapters you read).
