The term "convention" seems quite recognizable, but it is not always easy to determine its meaning. A convention is a word that includes various meanings that are close to each other and at the same time differ in essence. We will understand what this word means and what is the area of its use.

Definition and essence

The word "convention" originated from lat. Conventus, which means a meeting or a gathering. It should be mentioned and another Latin word - conventio, translated as a treaty, agreement. Proceeding from these two source words, the convention is a meeting designed to agree on some things, phenomena, events, laws. Most of the conventions cover a vast range of issues in their activities. We can say that this meeting is endowed with unlimited power in those areas, in respect of which it was established.

Areas of application of the term

Conventions exist in various fields of culture. The most famous political versions. For example, a convention is:

1. A meeting of elected deputies with legislative powers.
2. Council of elders or individual representatives of various political factions (signoren-convention).

One of the first to use this form of assembly was the Freemasons, thus holding their congresses or annual meetings. European Masonic conventions have been known since the XVIII century. In Russia they were called assemblies.

At the same time, his period of government is marked by ostentatious luxury and waste in the difficult post-revolutionary period for the French people. The Thermidorian Convention lasted until 1795.
