Wrong bite: its types and treatment

Incorrect bite is the most common pathology of the human jaw system. This defect can detect absolutely everyone. But to determine what type it relates to and what to do with it, only the dentist-orthodontist can.

Types of malocclusion

  • An open bite is the absence of contact between the anterior teeth of both jaws when they are closed, forming a vertical slit between them. In this case, there is a violation of speech and the process of chewing food. Also, the mucous membrane of the mouth starts to suffer, in which there is excessive dryness and inflammation.

  • The distal bite is an incorrect closing of the lower dentition when the upper jaw is slightly behind the relatively lower one. This greatly complicates the process of biting off solid foods (eg apples). There are times when the distal bite can lead to a strong lip protrusion.

  • A deep bite is when the upper front dentition overlaps the lower one by more than 1/3. With this pathology, there is always a violation of the temporomandibular joint and chewing muscles.

  • The occluded bite is characterized by overlapping of some upper teeth by the lower ones. This pathology can lead to an excessively rapid abrasion of the tooth surface, which causes pain in the temporomandibular muscles and joint.

  • Mesial bite occurs in people who have a large lower jaw, which in most cases is protruding forward, and a small upper jaw. In this case, there is a violation of the normal interaction of the jaws, which leads to a change in the appearance of the face.

Incorrect bite and the reasons for its formation

  • Heredity. It takes the first place for reasons of the formation of this disease. 68% of children will have an incorrect bite if their parents or other close relatives had a similar problem.

  • Because of childhood habits. Incorrect bite in children can form due to the fact that a child spends too much time with a pacifier in his mouth, has the habit of sucking a finger or a piece of a toy. Even biting the lower or upper lip leads to a violation of the correct position of the jaw.

  • Incorrect posture can also affect the formation of an incorrect bite. This relationship is explained simply. The wrong position of the head causes the trunk to move slightly forward, which, in turn, significantly affects the deformation of the jaw apparatus.

  • Breath. With very frequent diseases of tonsillitis, the child can develop tonsils. This leads to persistent colds, which, as a rule, disrupt the nasal breathing. Then the child has to constantly breathe through the mouth. If this continues for at least a year, then the risk of developing a malocclusion increases.

  • Lack of teeth or their excess amount. For example, there are cases when for some reason extra teeth grow that can be seen on an X-ray. Or, on the contrary, there is an innate absence of teeth rudiments, respectively, and themselves.

How to fix an incorrect bite .

Previously, it was believed that the opportunity to correct an incorrect bite is found only in childhood. But now there are many methods of correcting an incorrect occlusion, which are suitable not only for children, but also for adults. The most effective were recognized braces-systems.

Braces are devices that are attached to the teeth outside or inside. They put this system for a certain time (from 12 to 24 months), for which a complete correction of the occlusion occurs. In this case, the patient should visit his attending physician every 1-2 months - depending on the neglect of the curvature of the teeth and the delivered system.

Children who have not yet fully formed the dentition (6-12 years old) are placed in an orthodontic device, which is a plastic plate that produces alignment of the dentition.

Although, as mentioned above, you can get rid of the wrong bite at any age, but still its correction in childhood is much easier and less painful. Therefore, do not postpone the visit to the orthodontist, who will be able to help you and your children in time.
