Where can I find snow in Africa - on the hottest continent?

Many travelers are interested in knowing where to find snow in Africa. It would seem that this hot continent can not be cold, and local residents do not know what a frost is, and they have no idea what snow is. But this is completely wrong. Even at the equator on the peaks of the mountain peaks, though for a short while, glaciers are delayed. What can we say about other, cooler countries located in different parts of the continent.

The weather in Africa is quite diverse. This is not so surprising, because there are 53 states here, and all of them have their own geographical features, which, of course, affect the weather conditions. We are accustomed to seeing black people languishing in the heat. This continent has always been associated with deserts or tropical forests. Tourists flying to Egypt, Algeria or Kenya in search of warmth and sunshine and the idea of where to find snow in Africa will not come to mind.

Although the cold comes to the hottest continent not very often, but still in the northern states, such as Algeria, Morocco or Tunisia, it is not uncommon. What can I say, even hot Sahara, on the warmed-up stones of which you can fry an omelet, in 1979 it was covered with snow. True, this lasted only about 30 minutes, but the fact remains.

Moving farther south, snow is getting smaller and smaller. It can only be found on high ground. Frequent snowfalls provoke the formation of glaciers. Therefore, in the mountains of Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia, you can often see white peaks, although most of them very quickly "gray" under the rays of the scorching sun. Travelers who do not know where to find snow in Africa, the organizers arrange tours to conquer the peaks of local mountains. Tourists admit that this is an indescribable sight, when below there is a 50-degree heat, and under your feet lies a real glacier.

Snow in Africa can be observed from June to August. It is during this period that winter sets in. Residents of South Africa can even make snowmen, so much precipitation falls here. The population of the Cape is not at all accustomed to the white winter. The glory of the coldest city in South Africa was acquired by Sutherland. In winter, the air temperature quite often falls below zero degrees.

In the Dragon Mountains, there used to be a ski resort, but in 2011 it was closed due to mismanagement. A lot of people rested here, and artificial snow was produced throughout the winter . Cape Town is known for many thanks to the huge population of penguins. But contrary to all expectations snow locals here see infrequently. Several ski resorts can be found in Morocco, they are located in the Atlas Mountains.

The only country where you can find snow in Africa every winter is the Kingdom of Lesotho, lost high in the mountains. Its lower point is at the level of 1400 m, and this is much higher than in any other country in the world. There are several ski runs here. The season opens in June and lasts until September.

Snow on the hottest continent, although not a frequent visitor, but still not considered a curiosity for residents of some countries. Africa is full of contrasts, and sharply changing weather conditions are a vivid confirmation of this.
