What is this estimate?

"I got a good evaluation," "I've lost my marks!" - in these expressions and in colloquial speech, the words "score" and "mark" are often used as absolute synonyms, but is it correct? What are the criteria for their exposure in different spheres, what is the difference between them, what kind of species are they and what or who can be evaluated - all of which will be discussed below.

Let's turn to the dictionary

The word "mark" has several meanings, similar to each other only in that it is a matter of determining the value of a phenomenon by any parameter. The main interpretations of the dictionary article are three:

  • Directly process the assessment, determine the quality parameters and the amount of something;
  • Any opinion, opinion or opinion about something or about someone;
  • A mark that is presented to students in educational institutions.

As you can see, in the latter case the words "score" and "mark" become synonyms, especially in education, overlap in their meanings, but still they have some differences, which will be discussed below. The main meanings of the word "mark" are as follows:

  • A sign indicating something, or the process of putting up such signs;
  • Registering a record;
  • A symbol of knowledge and / or behavior of the student;
  • The designation by means of the figures of the height of an object relative to the sea level or another point taken as the reference point.

Grades and grades in the classroom

Contrary to the frequent use of the concepts of "score" and "mark," even in school life there is a significant difference between them. A mark is an indicator of a student's performance relative to an ideal, expressed in numbers or points. At the same time, evaluation is an indicator of a student's performance, his growth relative to his performance at the beginning of the current stage of training.

The latter is a broader and more accurate description of the learner's knowledge, since it often includes some recommendations that may be useful. Translating the results of evaluation into scores greatly narrows their meaning and content, moreover, it can turn the learning process into a chase after the mark for the sake of the mark itself.

How to evaluate the activity?

In the case of an activity, an appraisal is a fairly formal procedure for evaluating the performance of an employee, most often associated with gathering information about how well he performs his tasks. At the same time, the evaluation goes both in comparison with the results of other people, and in comparison with the employee's own results in the past. In this case, the evaluation of activities, also called the labor evaluation, is a multilateral process. It takes into account both the effectiveness of the activity, and the disciplined nature of the employee, his reputation and their impact on the overall success of the work.

What is the assessment of the conditions in which work is taking place?

What are the parameters for this position? In talking about working conditions, evaluation is a set of activities whose task is to identify harmful and / or dangerous factors in the environment in which work occurs, correlating them with established norms, and determining how they affect the health of employees and the success of their activities. This evaluation includes several stages:

  • Identification of hazards in the workplace;
  • Assessment of the extent to which the conditions in the workplace meet the requirements of labor protection;
  • Monitoring of the situation on the ground with hazardous and / or harmful working conditions;
  • The establishment of special guarantees for workers with hazardous and / or harmful working conditions and payment of statutory compensations.

As examples of enterprises where such inspections are conducted much more often, one can name nuclear power plants, factories and factories associated with the chemical industry, mines and drilling rigs.

What is the evaluation of works of art?

Not only phenomena that have applied significance, but also cultural phenomena, are often evaluated. For example, art works are regularly evaluated. In this case, the evaluation is a determination of how much the product corresponds to certain criteria given in advance. Here we can distinguish two coordinate systems: modern, which includes only the criterion of product innovation, its novelty, and the traditional system, which includes several factors at once:

  • An aesthetic criterion, which includes both the notion of the beautiful and ugly, and the criterion of expressiveness and inexpressiveness;
  • Gnoseological criterion, which contains such pairs as "true - false", "understandable - incomprehensible", "reasonable - unreasonable";
  • Moral and ethical criterion, assessing a work of art in terms of morality, normality, creativity and destructiveness;
  • Emotional-evaluation criterion, the most subjective of the above, evaluating the work, for example, from the position of how interesting it is for a person.

Summarizing

Summarizing, it can be said that evaluation is a fairly broad phenomenon, affecting both the production and cultural spheres of our life. Moreover, it is often something subjective, although work is under way to create universal, absolutely objective evaluation criteria that would minimize the impact of human emotions on the process of evaluating a particular object, phenomenon, act or event, their quality And influence on those or other areas of activity.
