What is the taskbar for Ubuntu?

It's no secret that comfortable work on the computer is almost impossible without such an element as the taskbar. In various operating systems, its appearance, functionality and customization capabilities (personal settings) may vary. In this article, we will talk about the taskbar in the Ubuntu operating system.

Ubuntu: taskbar

Its purpose, as in this and most other OSes, is to quickly access selected programs, files or folders, and display information about running applications. Unlike other operating systems, Ubuntu has two task panels. Each of them has separate functions.

The first panel

By default, it is on the screen vertically on the left. On it are those labels that you yourself added to it.

Initially, you can see several icons: the main menu entry, the default browser, the home folder, the Ubuntu application center, several applications from the office suite, management of system settings, and a shopping cart.

In addition, this panel contains a button that allows you to change the virtual desktop to one of four possible ones. Application windows are divided into four working areas, each of which is a full-fledged desktop. Switching between them and this button. This feature is the signature difference of all systems based on the Linux kernel.

Second panel

This is a horizontal area, located by default at the top edge of the screen. Unlike the first, it has more information than a functional nature. This taskbar consists of several parts. The name of the currently open application is displayed in the left corner, regardless of whether it is deployed on the whole screen or not. When you move the cursor to this area to the right of the name, the menu of this application is displayed (in Windows it is at the top of the open window).

In the right part is the so-called system tray. There are icons for Internet connection, Bluetooth (if available), volume, current time and button for quick access to the main parameters of the system. Clicking on each of these icons displays additional information and settings related to it.

The taskbar does not work

One of the drawbacks of Ubuntu is that it is designed for advanced users who already have the experience of communicating with a computer. Therefore, those who started acquaintance with the virtual world with this operating system, can inexperiably change the parameters responsible for the appearance of the taskbar and to ensure that it disappears from the screen altogether. If you have the above problem, do not despair! With a few simple steps, you can return the taskbar to its original state:

1) Open the terminal (this can be done with the Ctrl-Alt-T combination).

2) Install the dconf-tools package using the sudo apt-get install dconf-tools command.

3) Reset all settings with the dconf reset -f / org / compiz / command.

4) Now restart the desktop shell by writing in the terminal the following: setsid unity.

Done! Now you can again enjoy the standard view of the desktop and the Ubuntu taskbar.
