What is the 1ZZ engine and how is it arranged?

For the first time the engine 1ZZ was born in the late 90's. At that time, this unit was the perfect new representative of a family of Japanese engines. First, this engine was installed on the world famous "Toyota Corolla". Together with this machine, the machine was delivered to various countries of America and Europe, but in Russia this equipment was rather a rarity. Why did the 1ZZ engine not deserve universal recognition? The answer to this question you will find in our article.

Motor characteristic

This engine model was originally designed to replace the old "Toyota" line of units with more economical and powerful plants. In fact, the novelty turned out to be quite successful - the first test specimens turned out to be quite powerful and at the same time released less harmful substances into the atmosphere. After a while, the engine 1ZZ began to be manned on almost all Japanese cars of classes C and D. But nevertheless, it did not drive petrol engines out of the market, and they are still relevant for Russian and European buyers.

Why this unit has not gained such great popularity?

Proceeding from this, the question arises: "So why has it not yet replaced the" obsolete "gasoline engines from the market? Like both powerful and eco-friendly, fuel consumes less ... but what is the catch then?" The thing is that the 1ZZ engine is not subjected to any repair. Because of this, many motorists called this power unit "one-off". In practice, the following is obtained: after 150-200 thousand kilometers of running, this motor stops its movement forever. No major repair of it can not save and restore the old characteristics. And given the fact that in Russia there are still 20-year-old cars with a mileage of more than 400 thousand kilometers, he is not in great demand at all.

When developing the design of the power plant, the manufacturer made only one repair size of the crankshaft. For comparison: the engines of the family ZMZ (which are installed on modern "Volga" and "Gazelle") are equipped with crankshaft with 4 repair sizes. That is, after reaching a run of 200 thousand kilometers, the owner sends it to the boring, and the car again rides. With a new Japanese engine, this trick does not work. Repair of the engine 1ZZ is, rather, a fantasy, rather than a reality.

But this is not all surprises for a green new product. Another significant drawback, which owns the engine 1ZZ, is the poor quality of the alloy piston rings (oddly enough for Japan). Because of this, their resource has significantly decreased. Moreover, the oil in such an engine was consumed in an unmeasured amount (more than 500 milligrams / 1000 kilometers). The engineers decided to correct the situation only in 2002, when a new series of modified motors 1ZZ came out. The previous disadvantages were eliminated, including the number of oil drainage channels was increased and the offtakes of crankcase gases were improved. But one thing remained unchanged: this motor was still "one-off", and after 200 thousand kilometers it was simply thrown out.
