What are contraceptive spirals?

Contraceptive spirals are one of the most convenient and easy to use contraceptives. Women have been using them all over the world for more than 70 years. What kind of miracle is the method of protection, what kinds of spirals are there and what are their advantages and disadvantages? We'll talk about this in our article.

Intrauterine spirals (IUDs) operate according to two principles, depending on their type. They, in the first place, are a barrier to the penetration of spermatozoa into the fallopian tubes, since they create the effect of the presence of a foreign body in the uterus. But even if fertilization has occurred in some random way, the same contraceptive spirals will prevent the egg from attaching to the uterine wall.

What are contraceptives like the Navy? To be honest, they are called spirals, rather, out of habit. In fact, they are mostly T-shaped. They are made of plastic with a winding made of copper wire or from precious metals - silver or gold. Depending on the method of creation, a price is set on the contraceptive spirals - it can range from 5 to 12 thousand rubles. At the same time copper-plated and metal structures act due to the action of copper, silver or gold ions on the activity of spermatozoa. There are also IUDs impregnated with synthetic hormones. Their action is based on the stimulation of the viscosity of cervical mucus, which when thickened becomes an insurmountable barrier to sperm.

The contraceptive spirals are established exclusively by the doctor-gynecologist, since this process requires extreme caution, and with improper installation it is fraught with complications. What are the disadvantages of this method of contraception?

  1. Many women do not use the IUD for ethical reasons. After all, their action is sometimes based on the abortion of a fertilized egg from the uterus.
  2. When using the IUD, the risk of an ectopic pregnancy increases.
  3. In some women, contraceptive spirals provoke severe bleeding during the menstrual cycle, and also bring discomfort from the sensation of the foreign body inside.
  4. There is a risk of inflammation of the uterus with prolonged wearing of the spiral.

On the other hand, as a contraceptive, a spiral or an IUD is a convenient and long-term means of preventing unwanted pregnancies. They do not require permanent restoration - the period for which the Navy is established is 5 years. In addition, they do not interfere with the proper application of the hormonal background, nor the course of the menstrual cycle. The only "but" - to put them is recommended to already given birth to women and only after examination at the gynecologist and carrying out of analyzes.

Contraindications to the use of the IUD can serve as the following factors:

  • Neoplasm in the genitals;
  • Dysplastic processes occurring in the cervix;
  • Previously arising ectopic pregnancy;
  • Profuse and painful menstruation ;
  • Blood diseases.

If at least one of these factors is present in a woman's history, it is better to use other methods of contraception, since the consequences of setting the spiral can be very deplorable.
