We choose a modem for a laptop. A few recommendations for novice users

Modern technologies do not stand still and are constantly evolving. First of all, this is due to the fact that every year the needs of PC users are constantly growing, and manufacturers of various devices are trying to meet these needs as much as possible. For example, modern laptops are becoming easier and more compact, which allows their owners to work on such a mobile computer almost anywhere. But what's the point of having a portable compact laptop, if it's connected to the Internet with a cable?

To make information search in the worldwide network even more convenient, more than a decade ago the first modems for laptops were released, which have since been constantly improved. They are convenient not only for quick and easy connection to the network without cumbersome and restrictive cords and cables, but also for their compactness. A modern laptop modem can easily fit in a laptop bag, pocket or purse. But the most important advantage of this device remains mobility - with its help the user can check mail or visit his social network page from anywhere.

And now let's consider how to choose the right modem for a laptop, and what types of these devices can be found in the modern market. By the type of connection to the laptop conventionally, all such devices can be divided into three categories: USB-modems, PCI express cards and mobile routers.

Nowadays USB-modems are widely used. This happened due to their undeniable advantages - simplicity of connection, compactness and versatility. PCI express cards are currently not used (many modern laptops do not have a connector for them), although they largely benefit from USB modems in terms of ergonomics. This is due to the fact that such a modem for a laptop after the connection is almost completely "drowned" in the laptop's case, while a device connected via USB is almost always awkwardly pushed out from the computer for at least a few centimeters.

The "mobile" modems differ in terms of data transfer speed. The most widespread option in the domestic market is now considered to be devices using 3G technology - offers based on this method of wireless data transmission are now available in almost every operator. 3G-modem for a laptop allows its owner to use the Internet at speeds up to 8 Mb / s. However, the actual speed will be significantly different from the quality of the operator's coverage, the average connection speed in the receiving area and a number of other factors. A faster type of connection is a technology called "WiMAX", which allows you to work at speeds up to 10 Mbps. And the most "slow" solution in the current market is CDMA 450 technology (its "ceiling" is only 3.1 Mbps).

Before buying a device such as a laptop modem, you should make sure that the selected model is suitable for your laptop's operating system. Otherwise, when you connect the modem, there may be problems with installing the drivers and the performance of the device as a whole. If you decide to purchase a modem with a connection (by signing a contract with one of the cellular operators for the provision of Internet access services), do not forget to make sure there is a quality coverage in the places where you are going to use the services of this provider. This is due to the fact that the mobile Internet is a rather capricious thing and the quality of its coverage (and, consequently, the resulting speed) can be affected even by the thickness of the walls in the house. Therefore, before buying such a device, be sure to consult with a representative of the operator.
